It seems a lot of PIOers are making the Gold Coast and Brisbane their home in Australia. Just wonder if any of you new arrivals are having second thoughts now that the great Australian summer heat and humidity are upon us. Hot weather sounds great when you are shivering in Britain, but how is the reality? Anyone got any regrets or plans to move to cooler parts of Oz?

We didn't live in Queensland, we spent our time in Western Australia where the winters are actually quiet cold. The summer though is stinking hot. 42 deg for a fortnight is too much in anybody’s money.
We loved the first few summers and we didn't have aircon in those days, but we did have a pool. By the time we left years later we would avoid the sun like the plague. In some ways extreme heat is more debilitating than freezing weather just moving around in the heat of the day is not nice.
I worked as a driver for a time and once while working on a 48 degree day literally very nearly expired from heat exhaustion in the none aircon vehicle, apparantly I need to drink even more water than the 4 litres i had drunk.
We ended up in Albany on the South West coast, where it is much cooler they get 36 deg but not for days or weeks on end, winters are quite cold down there though.
You can always spot a new arrival as they are likely to be the ones sitting in the sun or on the beach
But now we are in the UK for a year or two (it’s winter as I write) I can once again understand the obsession with hot weather and the sun.

Been on Gold Coast for three months now, after never being to Australia before, so by no means an expert on the climate. Just been to Sydney for a few days however, and when we got back here, I could feel the difference immediately, and am seriously considering relocating further south. We moved here because of the employment prospects for my husband (bricklayer), not because of the weather alone, and don't know if he would find work as easily in the Sydney area.
Never been to Melbourne, but looks really nice; Sydney is a beautiful city.

We are in Townsville, and I dream of snow, frost, wind, you name it.
Yes it is very tough - you quickly get used to the heat (35 degrees or so), but the humidity means at least three showers a day, and can make you feel physically ill if you're outside for too long. We walk out of our lounge to the bathroom (which doesn't have aircon) and it hits you like a ton of bricks. Weird. But we are getting better. At least neither of us complain about the heat when you first get in the car anymore, and that was a killer at first.
The real b******* are the mozzies that go with the storms and humidity. We have changed repellant today, but tbh, I think we are even getting used to being bitten. It's all about adapting, and coming from Cumbria, it has been a bit of a shock. But it's only till feb (they keep telling us !!!!!!!!!! lol. )

[quote=davo453;172452]If your husband is a brickie then they would bite his hand off clean up the the shoulder in Perth.
Hi, thanks for your reply, it was a toss up between Perth and SE QLD due to the availability of work, but Perth's just as hot. He's not too bothered about the climate, the kids seem fine too - just me a bit soft perhaps!

Yup that is sooooooooooooooooo comforting - when the locals complain about the heat !!!!
You hit the nail on the head there !!!
Sometimes someone complains and I am not feeling really bothered, but at other times to know that the locals suffer (for want of a better word) is a huge comfort. They complain about the "bloody summer" and all the rest of it. Bring on February!!!!!!!!!
