Apparently, according to a report today the government are to probe the failure of the citizenship test and review it's operation. It seems that since October a fifth of people who have set the test have failed to achieve the 60% pass mark.. Out of the 10,636 people who took the test since its inroduction in October 2,311 have failed.
It doesn't say how they're going to review it - lets hope they decided it's too time consuming and get rid of it!

In order to apply for citizenship you have to be a permanent resident for 2 years. We cant sumbit our application until 9th Jan `09 but we can start everything a month beforehand.
Thats according to the DIMIA web site
We came over on a remp 457 visa and didnt get permanent residency until 9th Jan 2007
If 20% are not achieving the "pass" mark then I would say that it is being successful in weeding out those who could not be bothered to work at being an Australian citizen. If everyone passed because the "test" was too easy then there would be no point in having a test at all.
You can now arrive here and get a license to drive a car without any test... a car being potentially a lethal weapon. But, in order to get citizenship you have to pass an exam.
Admittedly passing a driving test doesn't necessarily mean you're safe to drive but how does passing an Australian general knowledge quiz make you safe to be a citizen.
