Emergency Dentist

Not had much cause to use the health system here yet and generally the kids teeth are seen to via the school dentist. But yesterday morning Tom (8) woke up with a very sore and swollen mouth and had an absess.

Rang a local dentist at 10am (we're not patients there) who offer emergency and saturday appointments - the dentist was fully booked but would see him at 12, the receptionist rang back within mins and asked if I could take him now.

The dentist did an x-ray whilst he was sat in the chair - which promptly appeared on her lap top, she gave us some antibiotics and will see him next week. $69 which we've claimed back on medibank Can't help wondering what would have happened had we still be in the UK

Hi Cal, we pay about $28 a month I think, for ambulance cover, dental and optical (as both alex and I wear glasses). I thought it was pretty cheap too considering the xray.. I forgt my medibank card so paid cash and Nigel just went on line and claimed it back when I got home. Apparantly, I could have just swiped the card. Nige seems to think we may be able to claim the prescription charge too (but we're not 100% on that one), We don't have the private hospital insurance. Got your card by the way - thank you

luv Ali

I'm not sure what the limit you can claim is, but anything back is a bonus. I think we get all this visit back

Medibank is a private care plan that Ali has - we have it too. Medicare (the NHS type thing) doesn't cover dental fees so yes, if you don't have cover it can be expensive.

Ali glad you posted this - with our medibank cover we got 2 free check ups a year at the dentist, was wondering how easy it would be to sort it out. Sounds quite easy now!

Hi felicity, it's one of those things that until you actually need to use it you don't know what it's like, nigel said it was easy to do the claim on line as the receipt had a number you put in. Had I taken the card it would have been easier - but was in a rush to get it sorted - at least we can all have a merry xmas now
