It's funny how things are perceived!

Last week... as i mentioned in another thread... OH had a luncheon with an ex brit who now lives in Melbourne. The 'date' was for a final job discussion... which went very well....and was at a hotel in the centre of London

Anyway, this guy brought his wife for the meal who then left to go shopping when it was time to talk shop.

Bearing in mind this guy was originally from the UK from about 15yrs ago (wife from China but now both Oz citizens)... they both hadn't brought out with them their mobile phones.... Why you may ask?... well they had heard that in london they could be mugged/pick pocketed for them... rummour generated from in and around Melbourne before they came to the UK.

Call me nieve, but I think that is amazing that we (the UK) has this 'scary' reputation... i mean i know we are scary... but think honestly to yourselves ... i certainly would not be worried about taking my mobile into london...

Like i said in the title... it's funny and maybe a little sad, how other people perceive us!... but then you can't blame them can you!!

Most of London is ok

We have had a number of stabbing and shootings in parts of London
Many of them reach the national press.

Unfortunately the whole of London and England has been tarred
by this.

Trouble is Mud Sticks!! A while back in the newspapers it said that kids were getting robbed for their mobile phones (and they were). I always say to my kids keep your mobile in your pocket and don't get it out unless you need to use it, otherwords don't flash it about. Bit like that with money too isn't it you try not to your purse/wallet out on the train etc.. so the whole world can see what you have. It's just not putting temptation in the way.

Oh yes i totally agree...

but i think the point i was trying to make was that as a brit living in the UK i would not think twice about walking the streets of london shopping with my mobile in tow.... and i think it is quite sad/scary that other people from other countries are too scared to do so because of rumours they might of heard... i was really quite shocked when OH told me!... is the uk really perceived in such a bad way?
