I must say that until today, I've never really followed Australian news and politics.
Now I'm agog to find out what impact people think the new Labor Government will have.
Cheers
Gill
It will have very little impact in real terms. If you read many of the posts on the australian news sites there's a lot of liberals 'crying in their beers' at the moment.
The current Labor party is pretty conservative in most repects. Like all governments they won't so much drive the econonmy as desperately try to hold on to it for domestic politics purposes. I think globalisation controls economies these days but no doubt that will be challenged?
Much is made about union domination in Labor but its a fact for most of us we're not union members or working in unionised environments.
It may be the case that the bias towards english speaking migrants (as a first language) will be regressed a little but I personally doubt it will be significant for a long time yet if at all?
Its quite probable that Workchoices are gone but probably a good thing it was a dumb piece of legis for the libs (cost them dearly) and many believe a nasty piece of legis directed at those least able to defend themselves.
As far as Health and Education go I've got little doubt that Labor will screw it up just as regally as the Libs have.
So in conclusion pretty much business as usual and don't worry the world isn't coming to an end just yet.

As health and education are state issues, Labor have been screwing them up for years. Oh well, at least every year 9 student will get a base rate laptop (probably less powerful than the ones they already own).
At the moment, the unions arent powerful but there will be pressures put back on the workforce to become union members and given their way, the unions will be pushing for compulsory union membership in many workplaces.
Actually, I dont think Krudd will be there for long - he will be dumped by the party about half way through so the left faction can get Gillard into the leadership position well before the next election (or Combet or Swan or ???)
It will make little difference to immigration the current boom in Australia
has nothing to Do with the Australian Government it is the commodities boom and the credit boom that has funded Australia,s economy.
Australia still needs skilled workers
Hopefully some of the workchoice law will be reversed.
and an end to no penalty rates for working weekends!!
Some of the low skilled workers have seen there wages decrease by
10% this is significant if you are on a minumum wage.
The only thing likley to affect imgration is if the U.S drags the rest of the world into
recession.

Yes you're quite right but the funding comes from the federal gov and its the states who then have to manage it (but you already know this don't you?). Its always a case of 'he who pays calls the tune' or else he doesn't pay. It will be interesting to see if the state and fed govs can actually work together on this one but I'm not holding my breath.

I very much doubt this. Its bit like the 'all muslims are terrorists' fear campaign.

Well anything is possible but it's certainly a bold prediction?
I think many Australians will be happy to see the Libs back in at the next election... to me this seems to be a warning shot across the 'ultra right wing' aspects of the past gov. We shall see?
Until this morning I'd mevr heard of the Australian WorkChoice legislation. I've just been reading a litle bit about it via Google Australia.
Do I understand this correctly, please?
It appears that businesses with less than 100 employees can shed staff at will? If they do so, do the employees have to be given redundancy payments?
It further appears that employers can pretty well push employees into giving up the protection of practically every piece of workplace legislation desingned to protect them?
If the stuff that I've just read is accurate and/or I've understood it accurately I'm no longer surprised that Howard's Govt got the jackboot last night. Are Laboor likely to repeal this legislation?
There would be UPROAR in the UK if wokers didn't have all the protection we currently have, I reckon. I know that most of it is EU-driven but I'm really shocked by this WorKChoice thing in Oz.
If anyone can be bothered to explain the whole thing to me in more depth I'd be really grateful because I couldn't find much on the Web.
Most of the aussies at work who were talking pre election indicated they would vote for Rudd because they 'fancied a change', and also the fact that Howard would step down at some point anyway. I suspect you're right fat pom that Liberal will be re-elected next time
