I would just like to say G'day to all the members out there! I have just come across this great forum while searching for advice on tuning in English TV sets! Our container eventually arrived yesterday. Hoorah! My family and I emigrated out to the Gold Coast 9 weeks ago and have settled in very nicely, especially the kids in their new school. Apart from that is of course, the wife and I who are still finding it a major problem trying to find work. Fortunately, the surrender of my endowment policy is seeing us through! My wife is a Primary School teacher and has discovered that the relevent paper work needed by the authorities was incorrectly submitted. That has put us back a few months. I too, have found it a struggle to get employment on the Gold Coast. Having worked for BT and Bedfordshire Police as an IT & Communications Engineer I have found it difficult to find permanent work. I think there maybe more chance of Andrew Strauss knocking one of Warnie's slow deliveries out of the MCG! A few casual hours here and there tend to be the trend. Anything you do workwise needs a license even if you are UK trained! As a holiday destination, people tend to come and go. The Gold Coast is well known for it's casual laid back approach to local employment. Anyway, Christmas is coming! The shopping centres' require jolly guys dressed up in red suits. If it doesn't need a license I will start applying! I would love to hear from views of other members, particularly local members. Gazzer

Hi Cal,
Thanks for your reply. I just thought I would let you know about my first job trial. The interview was in Varsity Lakes and the job involved installation of cable for security systems. Although I came to the Gold Coast for the lifestyle I have come to work and work hard. But this first job involved a 75 hour week travelling to Brisbane and back with a 10 minute smoko break each day. Although I have been network cabling for 18 years I still have to pass an ACA cabling license on-line at a cost of $520 before I can do it here legally. It was on the back of my qualifications that I was passed by The Trades Recognition of Australia (TRA). Even the course consultant said it was a farce! Don't get me wrong, I don't want to sound like a whinging Pom because I love it here! It is good for the country but not necessarily so for the employee. It's a shame the UK didn't employ the same tactics for foreign workers.
