Warning Stolen Identity.

We left good old UK in may 07 so have been in oz since then.

Got a phone call from my mother in law on sunday ( i had all our mail sent to them ie told the bank there address and all the the other ppl like elec, dvla etc ).

It seems that someone has stolen my identity in the Uk from our old address, my mother in law got a letter sent to her from goldfish the credit card ppl about my recent application for a credit card. And could i supply them with more info. Well i have never applied for one and have never been with goldfish so it looks like one of them stupid flyers got sent to our old address in the uk and someone has used it.
I am now in the process of chasing down experia the credit card ppl to find if any other cards have been applied for and if they have been issued to try and sort it out.

So just be aware people.

An Idea?

I was thinking of notifying Experian when we leave, aswell as all the other companies.

I heard about woman a few months back, she was getting details of loads of people who had left the country and claiming benefits for them!!!
If she could do that, imagine what they could do with a few credit cards application forms.

Nightmare

Shredder!

Yup, those scam artists are pretty darn clever. I was watching Watchdog (I think. It was years ago!) and they advised people to shred any paper info that had name and addresses on, even junk mail. Well, those that will be emigrating, will probably be chucking out years worth of old bank statements, bills etc and just binning the lot. That's when those buggers get their hands on your info and start imitating you!

Before we left for Singapore, we borrowed a massive cross shredder and shredded anything paper that we weren't keeping. Will be doing the same when we leave Singapore, though there will be less chance of that kind of fraud happening here.

Hi
We moved to France from the UK (now moving onto Oz in case you are wondering!) and both my husband and I have been victims of this. Since we have left, we have had people trying to use cards that we haven't applied for, cards that we thought we had cancelled when we left have been used and balances used right up. I couldn't apply for an Experian Credit Check because we didn't have a current UK address - if anyone knows any way around this, please let me know, my parents-in-law who have received mail for us even though I never redirected it there (?) have had demands for payment from bailiff/debt collection companies in both name and my hubbie's and I have certainly NEVER lived there.

The problem we face now is that before moving on to Oz we are moving back to the UK for a few months as we have sold our house here and thought it better to spend a few months near friends and family, but we will go back to credit problems. I am hoping that once in the UK I can then get an Experian report and try and sort out what has been done in our names. It's a bit of a nightmare.

I don't really know what the answer is, because I thought I took all precautions to prevent anything happening, but there you go.

I have written to everyone informing them we don't live in the UK and that it must be id theft, and hope that does the trick.

Good luck anyone who might be dealing with it now........

Carla

UPDATE

Well my mother in law rang me again on thursday and i have now applied for a mbna credit card, so thought i would ring the good old english police, for them to say nothing to do with them because no one has actually commited a crime (even though i said that they had applied for cards in my name they said that untill they get and use them its not a crime!!!!!).

So i rang mbna up and find out what the hell is happening, got put through to a helpfull bloke who told me that the pratts who had applied for the card had failed. And that my details had been flagged up as a potential stolen identity so hopefully should be ok now
