My daughter had her brace fitted to her teeth on Friday - I'm still in shock as it's costing us $4,600 - I've thought of taking her out of school and sending her to the mines so she can pay us back, but thought that may be a little extreme - left her under no illusion that if she doesn't do what the orthodontist says she's had it!!

Oooouuuuuch !!!!!!!!! Bet that hurt Ali............. Just been through this with my daughter recently and If it makes you fell any better they have changed the rulings re: braces in the UK now. If its purley cosmetic, ie: crooked or overcrowded, you have to pay for it yourself, but if your teeth are so bad it will cause them damage ie: over bite, then they will treat for free, but any breakages/damage or loss of braces then you have to pay for it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope it helps..........................

Oh my word my two are 2 and 1 better start saving I had terrible teeth when I was young!!! Did you have to pay that all at once or can you pay in stages. Ali have been looking at leeming online what made you choose there to settle.
My daughter had her brace removed in December last year so I thought we'd got away with paying for Orthodontist treatment as both my boys teeth were fine... UNTIL... youngest knocked his front teeth out in March this year (do you remember??).
Our dentist has just rang today to say he cant start treatment for a few months yet as the tooth they put back in needs more time to settle.
So it looks like its gonna be an expensive time for us, he also needs 3 crowns on the smashed teeth which, if has them done in childhood, will need replacing by the time he's fully grown!
We arrive in Oz in January.
Is any Orthodontist treatment available through private health insurance (clutching at straws now)?
Ali, just make sure your daughter wears the retainer brace when the normal one comes off, otherwise it'll be a waste of 4K as her teeth will move back again.
My daughter has to wear it at night til she's 21 but she stopped wearing it a few mths ago and when she tried to get it on again it wouldnt fit , well, it did just about but hurt like mad and she had to force it on. Its ok again now cus she wore it night and day for a few days.
Hi
Well my son aged 12 has waited over 18 months for treatment to have a brace fitted on the NHS.We went for an appointment a couple of weeks ago and the orthodontist said that she would recommend not starting any treatment until we get to Oz in case of any differences in the braces/procedures etc..Therefore we will also have to pay once we get there. I had kind of thought it'd be around the 4-5000 dollar mark so am not totally shocked by ali's bill. Its a lot to pay though isn't. How easy is it to get a dentist out there? I'm hoping to get treatment started pretty soon after arriving.

Ali
is that for top and bottom or just one? We took our daughter to the orthodontist on monday for the initial consultation he said she need to have four teeth out then braces on top and bottom, we are hoping to get them fitted before we come out, then just have the maintainance done in oz.

Yes Orthodontal treatment can be partly covered by private health insurance . I think we got something like $800 back off a total bill of $4000+ . Not a great lot but better than nothing I suppose .
