This phrase fascinates me, when applied to life here in Oz. As a Pom, Oz seems to me like a perfect hybrid between the UK and the USA. Essentially, there are a lot of British mannerisms that have pervaded Aussie culture (yes, they do have one) such as the notion of fair play and support of an underdog (known as a "battler" out here). There are also a lot of Americanisms (extrovert mindset, commercialism spring to mind immediately). Naturally, you won't get thanked for pointing out either!
Personally, this cocktail culture appeals to me though I could also see how it might grate with some visitors to these shores. What interests me the most is the direction Australia is heading in, with an influx from so many different cultures. Will these two dominant influences eventually become diluted? Will Australia eventually become its own cultural reference point, or will it continue to derive influences from other cultures with the influx of a new generation of optimistic migrants?
I think it will definitely carry on getting influences from other cultures mainly from the different colours they bring to an already diverse Australia. However that said the 'No worries' attitude and culture I doubt will ever die over here and everyone who comes to these shores no matter of their background can easily adopt the Ozzie way of life. It has a unique persona all of its own.
i think australia has always been a mixture of culture anyway - its not a very old country is it and lots of europeans settled there so there has been a mixture from the start?
i think you are right about the ozzie lifestyle - thats why we all want to go there and the ozzies are very proud of their country and lifestyle so hopefully it will remain like that
