Tim, please - what is a "torrent" website?

The British TV series "Wanted Down Under" can be downloaded from the above website, so I have just read elsewhere. The guy who said this said it is a 'torrent' site.

I have never heard of a 'torrent' site, but I never download films etc from the Web and I have to say that my knowledge of how to work these machines is limited to what I need to to in order to hobble around (practically on crutches) in the contraption at work. The Office Geek helps me out occasionally (when I forget that I wanted to brain him last time he helped but also treated me to a half hour lecture on his favourite subject, which is Geekery rather than the job he is paid to do for us!)

What should one know about a torrent site before using one, please? Explained in idiot-proof terms, please, if possible...... :?

Its file sharing using multiple piers, you download a client (software that sits on your machine) which connects to a central server which maps you to various locations that contain the file downloading a bit from each location. Its quite tricky and you don't always get what you think you're getting. I would recommend limewire which is a bit different to bit torrent but much more user friendly and contains no spy/adware. Make sure your virus software is up to date
