      Karratha

Thanks for all your replies on Kalgoolie (i was actualy looking forward to going) but they have now moved the goal posts and look like sending me to Karratha.

Anybody know anything about it other than it's smaller than Kalgoorlie and not driveable to Perth so they can rob me on flights.

Um... at least it's a lot closer to the beach than Kalgoorlie is, I guess. Just watch out for stonefish, they're found in tropical areas.

18 hours for me to snooze I loved waking up at Geraldton.... the red earth sends me to but I love the place..... much better air services now.. Brisbane, Melbourne etc... we only had the big Q for a while but Skywest, Virgin, Qantas are back. It depends on time of day etc Brooksey but I could get some reasonable seats on occasions, yes they are a big ex'y I agree compared to .....

If they manage to do the deal with the Chinese on desalination at Cape Preston plans are afoot for a 50,000 major town now.

The camps for FIFO are excellent, I often went out to dinner there, the cheapest in town Susie x

Well if your in Brisbane Brooksey the heat shouldnt bother you in Karratha... Hey, you are making money, there are far worse places to be in my opinion, I believe your family will stay at home , so you are blessed not having to go via Perth which was a drag, a direct flight, able to pay bills, slip, slop slap and you are made Susie x

And I was there before Siam and her bloke...It was only a cattle and sheep station in the early 60s. but the town was located some 20 km closer to the sea and has grown into a flourishing administration centre. It has some excellent day drives to the surrounding Pilbara and the stark rich redness of the district...Fabulous.
Some extremely good fishing to be had off Dampier and around the Intercourse Islands...That's right, you read it correctly...

      Hey,
I have not been there but my partner spent a couple of months in Karratha from September '09 to March '10 and she didn't like it at all.

Temperature during the day hardly every dropped below 40 degrees Celcius (for some weeks it was 47). Apparently there was some sort of mini fly-invasion with thousands of little flies flying in your face and they are not even bothered if you try to fan them away. Something she considered extremely annoying. I don't know if they are around all year though. She also said that you can't swim in the ocean as there are saltwater crocs and plenty sharks. House prices are also in the sky due to the mining boom and therefore house shortage.

She spent a couple of months in Fremantle/Perth as well and liked it a lot better.

Above info is of course subjective, and as I have not been there myself, second hand on top of it
