depends what number you want oz or uk?
oz payg phones i dont think from memory are much different in price.
we are on uk vodafone fones and when we went to oz in 2008 we just bought oz vodafone payg sim cards, give you an ozzy number and work fine.
if you buy a payg fone in uk you will still have to buy oz simcard out there
i believe in oz payg is called "prepaid" and top ups they call "recharge"
you should be able to look at payg fone prices online,

      Vodafone Mobile Phones & Internet

Prepaid Mobile and SIM Packs. Optus Prepaid Mobiles

hope this helps you out :)

A standard Nokia PAYG phone with $10 of credit will cost you between $40 and $50. You can buy them almost anywere, Post office, supermarkets, etc etc

I have heard that a locked mobile in the UK is not locked once you have left UK.

If you have a contract phone bought from carphone warehouse then it should be unlocked - and if you have an O2 contract you can unlock the phone on the o2 website.

I will try and find the page and post it here later - they don't make it easy to find.

Nah, wait until you get here. It's too much hassle to be bothered with unlocking etc just get a new one on a package that you like when you arrive. There are some good deals to be had. You can pick them up pretty much anywhere once you arrive

I'm not so sure - I've just bought the iphone4 while I'm over here in the UK (unlocked & no contract from apple store) - I reckon if you can afford it then it's better than being tied to a contract for 18 - 24 months.

You can buy them outright here too, and with iphone 5 in the wings probably better to wait for that.
