Winning breeds confidence just as surely as a losing streak breeds desperation, as demonstrated respectively by Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton in qualifying for today’s Monaco Grand Prix.
Button came to this track knowing its unique demands were not a great fit with his driving style and he struggled to adapt himself and his car for most of qualifying, before making the breakthrough with a stunning final effort that secured him pole position. Hamilton, by contrast, at a track perfectly configured to allow him to transcend the limitations of his McLaren and fight for victory, made a fundamental error early in the session, crashing at Mirabeau corner and destroying the rear end of his car. He will start today’s race from the back of the grid.
