HI EVERYONE

I LIVE IN REGIONAL NSW WHERE BELIEVE ME, THEY ARE THICK AS "BLEEP"

THE SO CALLED CORPORATE I WORK FOR IS AS RACIST AS THEY COME HOWEVER ONLY TO "POMS" SORRY BUT I CANT STAND THE WORD ANY MORE.

IF I DARE MAKE A COMMENT WITH "CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM" I AM CALLED A WINGEING POM, SOMETIMES I AM REFERRED TO AS THE TEN POUND POM EVEN THO I AM WAY TOO YOUNG, ALSO REFERRED TO AS THE GREAT UNWASHED.

I AM CONSIDERING TAKING THEM TO THE TRIBUNAL FOR RACIAL VILIFICATION BECAUSE ITS NOT RIGHT. DOES ANYONE ELSE SUFFER THIS TYPE OF ABUSE AND DOES ANYONE KNOW OF THE ORGANISATION THAT IS AGAINST BEING CALLED POMS ALL THE TIME?

OTHER THAN THAT, ITS A PRETTY PLACE, BUT WISH TESCO'S MARKS AND SPARKS AND BOOTS WERE HERE TOO, NOT TO MENTION A MILLION AND ONE PROPER PUBS AND CLUBS,,, SIGH,, BUT HEY, YOU CANT HAVE IT ALL. XXXXXXXXXXXXX ANY HELLP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Hi Natalie

Sorry you are feeling rough at the moment. It can be hard to fit into a different culture. And from my experience, it is hardest of all when the culture seems to be so similar but then sideswipes you with a totally unexpected subtle difference.

But I do worry when I see words such as these

You have to remember that you have moved to a different country and you have to adapt or go back I'm afraid. It has been said time and time again on here that Australia simply is NOT England with sun.

Now, I really don't want to offend you, but if you were in England and some immigrant kept on telling you that they missed the shops from their home country and that the pubs aren't as good, or the food or whatever. My guess is that you would be offended. Even if you didn't feel completely loyal to your country beforehand, it would bring a raging sense of patriotism to the fore, wouldn't it?

In that context, even "constructive criticism" of work customs would have to be phrased very, very carefully to avoid offence.

I think that you are now in a sort of catch 22, whereby your colleagues are possibly over-sensitive to any criticism from you as that is what they are expecting to hear. It will be hard, but I think you can turn things around.

Perhaps you could try to show your colleagues a more adaptable approach. Let them know what you like about their work practices, their country, their food, shops etc. See if you can socialise with them and show a lighter, less-critical approach. Bite your tongue over concerns you have about work for the time being, just put up with it for now unless you are in a supervisory role, of course!

I hope that you can find more to like in NSW. Give it a good go.

All the best.

But I dont get it ,,, in the workplace, in the media, they can call us pommie *******, that was on austar over an ad for cricket or rugby, doesnt anyone understand its racist?

You cant call aborigines abos,s bungs, or even effing black boys, they are now called something else, thats cos it upsets them, so why is it so hard to get across that "some of us" dont like being referred to by our race. My point is, I love australia, and have travelled the world, this is a great place, but sorry, I can say I miss the shops in England, because I do. If an Indian woman says she misses the curry houses in bombay I woujld understand.

Regional NSW is significantly different to metro areas as you probably know?

Its their home ground. So, to put it simply adapt or leave... move to metro areas if you can't stand it.

I'm a kiwi and have to put up with the kiwi baiting that Aussies enjoy so much. Bests response? Give them it back. The Aussies I deal with enjoy the argument, and don't respect you if you can't hand it back to them.

I had to let the noisiest ones know that cricket captain Ponting's eyes are too close together, their rugby players are wannabe All Blacks, and Aussie has to have migrants to raise the IQ of Australia (also 'cos their "roo shagging" means they don't have enough kids to maintain the workforce). They laugh it off and include you more when you can defend yourself.

Don't take it personally. Settlers have to be thick skinned and carry a pioneering mindset to get over these obstacles.

Ozzies can take the banter! I have found anyways! Most of them that is! I have been called a whinging pom but i call them something equally flattering! You have to think positively, if you dont like it here then your views on ozzies will cloud your vision! Take the banter as part of ozzie culture! If you cant do that then you are in the wrong place! I wish you luck!

I agree just give it back!! All english are "dirty convicts" as well aren't we..... Just laugh it off and tell them to get a life, they'll soon get bored but i think taking it as far as a tribunal is not going to get you anywhere. I do think the further away from the built up areas you go, the more old fashioned it becomes, aussie's are very proud of their country, so maybe they feel the need to have a dig now and again. They can see that it bothers you so they are going to carry on. Play them at there own game that's what i say. Good luck :)

I'm sure I've seen his eye's do that after being told that England has just won a series and is being hailed by the British press as the best in the world with a long and enduring dominance ahead of them and that the buses should be prepared and a call put through to the Queen. :)

I dont mind being called a pom and regually refer to myself as one, neither would i class it as racist (but heh i left the UK to escape the PC brigade). I have found if you get all uptight about it , they will give it you more, relax ,laugh and banter back and they seem to accept you.

There is nothing meant by this and I am always calling myself a pom and have a laugh about it. Seriously, the Ozzies are not meaning it in a nasty way, it is only meant as a bit of humour. Please don't take it personal.:notworthy:

just laugh it off..tell them to get over themselves etc..

Seriously, quit your whingeing lol.

I know regional is different to metro however as it is kinda protected from multiculturalism but it's not worth getting upset about...more often than not it's just annoying.

My colleagues at work say what they hate most is people coming over telling them that in the UK we have this, we do it this way which is a better way than what you do it. Your shops are rubbish, we have M&S and Tesco's etc., Their first thought is "why the hell don't you go back then", or " if it's so good why did you come". They get fed up of it and if it's continuous they get fed up of you and hope you'll leave.

When I text one of my closest friends here (an aussie) to tell her we'd passed our citizenship test, her reply was one word F***!, which really made us laugh because it wasn't said in a bad or derogatory way at all .... it was just a shorter way to say congratulations.

Have you told your colleagues that it upsets you when they say the things they do .... they may be able to reassure you that it's not said with any malice.

So you are both a whingeing pom AND brain damaged. Get over it, and stop being sensitive. It takes balls to dish it back with good humoured banter.

My 16 year old daughter has a good bit of banter with her Ozzie history teacher.

She says to him, we are not poms, you are, you are descended from the convicts - they have a laugh about it.

I guess if you don't want to be called a whinging pom, then don't whinge. I never say anything bad about australia, in front of australians. That would be bad manners.

On this forum its a different story.
