Driving the coastal route from Melbourne to Sydney - where to stop

      Chaps

My parents are driving from Melb to Sydney and back when they come over here to visit in June and will aim to do the trip the first direction in two days. Thus they are following the coastal route, and wondered where would be a good place about 2/3 thirds of the way, to stop on route. I can find a B&B but anyone recommend a good location on this route to stop, and secondly, are there other recommendations of places to stop on the way?

Any thoughts or comments most welcome.

      Thanks

      Andy

Thanks chaps - will be for the parents and they will love it, I'm sure.

What do you reckon the driving time is, given the stops? Two days a fair time to do it in with stops?

It's possible to do it in two but it can be a tiring drive so make sure you get plenty of rest the night before you go,I am sure,as I said, you will love it.
You may not get to Sydney, you may decide to spend the rest of your life in some of the towns on the way.

Add to that, Batemans Bay & Kiama, there are heaps of accomodation right up the coast, overnight cabins at caravan parks & lots of motels, so they should be well catered for.

Merimbula is a great place to stay. For local wildlife in a "wild" setting, the local golf course is a favoured haunt of kangaroos and wallabies. May need to stop over for two nights en route rather than one though, because from Merimbula to Melbourne is around 600km and takes a good seven and a half hours or so. Buchan caves are worth a visit (Gippsland, to the north of Lakes Entrance, 300km+ or so from Melbourne.) Maybe your parents could make two stop overs, one at/near merimbula and another around Lakes Entrance. taht way they would have time to see things, rather than just drive for the whole day.

Google puts it at about 14:30 driving time so it will be two long days driving for them - it could be longer all depending on the time of year they travel. Tathra is nice as is Mallacoota about half way along. I have a soft spot for Orbost but it doesnt have much for a tourist. Lakes is a bling kind of town but you do get a nice view of 90 mile beach.
