I haven't got an answer I'm afraid, but I to would like to know this too and if there are any modifications that have to be done to make it legal in Australia.

Hi, we are shipping our car as wont be able to sell it here for a decent price and its worth much more in Oz. You can arrange to ship it with your furniture. Once in Oz you will have to pay customs duty and GST. Calculated ours will cost about £ 2000 plus the registration fees once there. There is info at www.daffa.gov.au/aqis or Australian customs.
Hope this helps.![]()

Email from Customs.gov.au:
Thank you for your email.
In response,
The first thing that must be obtained before importing a vehicle into Australia is a 'Vehicle Import Approval'. This is issued by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development & Local Government (DOTARS). For more information you may wish to visit their website at:
www.dotars.gov.au
Vimports@dotars.gov.au
Ph: 1800 815 272 within Australia
Or
Ph: +612 6274 7506 6013 outside Australia.
Once you have obtained a 'Vehicle Import Approval' from DOTARS, The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) may then require the vehicle to be steam cleaned. For more information on this you may wish to visit their website: www.aqis.gov.au
Email: pr@aqis.gov.au
Ph: 1800 020 504
The vehicle will normally attract an import duty rate of 10%, the duty will be charged on the AUS$ value of the car. Once the car is in Australia a valuation can be obtained by contacting a motor vehicle valuer within the state you are travelling to.
The vehicle also attracts a Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate of 10%. The GST is paid on the combined value of:
- The Australian value of the vehicle
- The duty paid on the vehicle and
- The cost of freight and insurance.
For a rough guide to the Australian market value of your vehicle you may wish to visit www.redbook.com.au
The vehicle may also attract a Luxury Car Tax (LCT). If the vehicle's value is greater than AU$57,180 then 33%LCT will apply to excess amount.
For LCT the value of the vehicle used is the combined total of:
- The Australian value of the vehicle
- The duty paid on the vehicle
- The cost of freight and insurance and
- The amount of GST paid.
Because of the various duty rates applicable, and the existence of two valuation regimes depending on whether the car was purchased before or on or after 2 March 1998, a publication, called the “Guide to the Importation of Privately Owned Motor Vehicles or Motor Cycles” is available which clearly describes the process involved and the methods to be used in calculating any duty and tax liability.
Once your vehicle is in Australia you will have to contact your local Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) for registration/compliance of your vehicle. You can contact the RTA at:
Website www.rta.nsw.gov.au
Or
Ph: 13 22 13 (within Australia)
Ph: +61 2 4920 4159 (Internationally)

This may or may not work.... but this:http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=dhd...db7kkphb&hl=en
is a copy of the form you have to fill in. DOTARS also sent a "brochure" of info, but it's also available on their website. Also on there is the legislation which contains all the stuff you have to make sure your vehicle has/does to get a compliance plate...
Hope that helps!
