the joy of text, and afterwards wont return your calls.

i got laid off from work the last week, due to my boss not being able to find any work, this was done by text which i think is terrible, a few hours later though i got a call saying he had managed to find further work and i was reinstated, we completed this job and i tried to ring him to for the address for the next job, but his phone is off, i sent texts but he does not reply, left messages on his phone, so that is it been laid off the yellow way, does not bother me, wanted to go home anyway, but its the nature of how he has done it, beware aussie bosses because they are p****s, i have worked for a few and i know, good luck if you are a tradie subcontracting, you are going to need it.

      Kazmatt,
I feel sorry that you have been treated so shabbily by your employer, sending you a text message to tell you there is no work is unacceptable in todays world and is thoroughly unprofessional, the least he could have done was call you and speak to you,or better still come and see you,so his actions are undefendable, however your statement about aussie bosses is a generalisation and I think unfair, there are poor bosses in Australia, and it sounds like you have met a few, which is a shame, but I'm a boss and I dont treat my employees badly,so please, don't label all Australians with the same tag.

sorry mate, but i only speak as i find, i am sure there are some decent bosses out there, to be fair i thought this guy was fine until christmas when he sacked another lad who worked for us by text, the lad tried phoning him over and over again but had no reply so he rang me, i knew then he was a d**k, i am personally not trying to tar all aussie bosses with the same brush, just a lot of them who give work to subbies, there is no loyalty here, i have probably earned this lad a lot of money over the 4-5 months i have worked for him, just a phone call i wanted, i have had a lot of jobs since being here and each and every boss has been an idiot, i do appoligise for being a little angry, but wouldnt anyone be.

You don't have to apologise because you haven't done anything wrong ,in my view you are the one who has been cruely wronged by this very unprofessional boss,my sympathies are entirely withyou and I hope you will be able to sort things out,I also hope you will reconsider your decision to return to the UK,but I guess that depends on being able to find employment.
I just wanted to say that although there are bad bosses in Australia there are good ones too.
      good luck with whatever happens

I am really sorry to hear that you have been treated this way but this sort of thing happens in Britain all the time too. I answer calls on an Employment Law helpline and all day at the moment there are calls such as yours, some bosses really are vile!

Some people can't handle the difficult situations that being a boss presents like having to let people go. Your boss is probably one of them who doesn't have many management or people skills and took and easy way out by telling you by text and turning his phone off. Is he the actual owner of the business or a supervisor - if he's not the owner perhaps you could complain. It may not get your job back, but at least you'll have had your say

Whether he has people skills or not, nobody should be treated like that as a human in any situation especially work.

I would make a complaint I agree with Ali, or send him a matter of fact mail and let him know your thoughts.

I remember in my last contract, there was this insane woman who had no idea of how to act in a corporate environment, who's idea of management was threatening people, slamming hands on the table and being as aggressive as possible. No management skills or decorum at all, thought that if she acted like a man it would make her noticed, I thought her an embarrisment to woman. A lot of complaints were made about this woman and she was sent on an anger management course whilst various junior member walked out. I do understand where you are coming from, Australia is quite far behind when it comes to management.

Personally myself I would wipe the floor with him but that's me.

Now lovediving, after some sensible posts you go making silly statements again,Australia IS NOT far behind in management, that is a gross generalisation and for someone who is supposed to be a professional person it's quite strange.
Yes there are some appalling managers in Australia, just as there are in the UK,US,NZ,Hong Kong, anywhere.but to make statements like you did there is just wrong,in fact to demonstrate how wrong I can tell you that a large merchant bank in Germany recently sent a team of 65 managers to Australia to see how Macquarie Bank runs their dealing room, the Mac Bank system has now been set up in Germany and is working well.
This whole idea that Australia is backward as far as management is concerned is a silly myth that the facts do not support.
BTW I have a friend who is a human resources manager for a large finance company in Melbourne, would you like to meet him and tell him how backward he is? or is it only managers of small companies like builders who you class as backward?

Kazzmat i wish you all the best , hopefully there will be a positive outcome for you , unfortunately theres a lot of insensitivity with ozzie management , and their inadequate skills to deal with people , granted they are not all the same , but for anyone with a little savvy in people skills and human decency , australia has a long way to go , going through a similar situation , and when this crap for us is over and done with i will post exactly what has happened to us , .... some folks egos need massively kissing out here , and that leaves a bitter taste in our mouths ..... something we were not prepared to do , hang in there if you can , we wish you all the best
