An idea of how big Oz is...

      Hi,
My sister-in-law sent this fab postcard which gives you some idea of how vast Oz is (and why it takes 5 1/2 hrs to fly Brisbane>Perth !)

Yes I can remember at school having to cut out a picture of England and finding out how many times it would fit in Australia. God I hope australian education has come on since then!!!

OZ is 70 times the size of the UK, the second smallest state Victoira is the same size as the UK and the smallest state Tasmania is the same size as Ireland. l think theres some wealthy cattleman in the outback who owns a farm the same size as England.

Purely in terms of landmass, Australia at 7,686,850 sq km's is 31.39 times larger than the UK (244,820 sq km's),Victoria is almost exactly the same size as the UK (227,600 sq km's).
Anna Creek station is the worlds largest cattle property,34,000 sq km's (6 million acres) about 11 times larger than the largest US cattle property.

A little aside to that, mate; when I lived in Derby, WA., in 1964, the world's longest cattle trough was on the outskirts of Derby and the bossman of King Ranch, Texas, on hearing about it, sent a couple of senior men from the ranch to measure it up and found their cattle trough was some 4 yards shorter. Some wag asked what they were doing, and when they told him, he said "bet ya can't make Texas as big as WA"
      True story.
Also, most of the NT and Kimberley cattle stations are 1 million acres plus, which makes the US properties look small.

      Cheers, Bobj.

      Great story,Bob,thanks !
I note from the site that Anna Creek is only carrying 3000 at the moment coz of the drought.
Could probably carry 100 times that amount in the good times,I should imagine.
      Cheers

Yep, down from 70% to 61%...Still, more water than in the Caspian Sea.

      Cheers, Bobj.
