what about the big spiders?!!
Hi all
I know I sound really daft even saying this but am I the only person to be really worried about the bugs in Oz? We are waiting for our visa and planning to head for the central coast NSW. I am starting to get nightmares about huge spiders ever since a friend of ours who lives in sydney suburbs told me how they had a huntsman in the house. I can honestly say that I would be a total wreck if I came across one of those in my bedroom and I don't like the thought of running into a funnel web either! Friends are telling me that I shouldn't move if I have such a phobia, am I alone? Please can anyone tell me honestly if I am likely to encounter these beasties on a regular basis as I may need to think about therapy!!!!

dont read "im i going to die" or look at the pictures!!!!!
Spiders are all around but you wont see many as they live under rocks and in dark places. know what you are doing and all should be well. keep outside clean and dont leave things lying around. no homes for them = no spiders
Why are your friends telling you not to go? because they are worried about your safety or is it for selfish reasons???
Kind Regards

Having lived in Oz for most of my life, you do get used to the spiders!(and everything else creepy/crawly too!!!)Hard to believe I know!Just don't do anything silly like walk through bush (its ok if you follow a track and make some noise, the snakes are more scared of you and will slither away)Wear gloves whilst gardening or if you are pottering around in a shed or whatever. You can see most things anyway and then avoid touching them.Huntsmans are big,yes but most just want to stay out of your way. While in Oz I had to kill a redback spider which was crawling up the curtain in my then baby daughter's bedroom,I moved a log outside, only to have to put my shovel through a scorpion, whilst rock climbing,I went to put my hand on a rock above my head to hoist myself up and luckily looked first and there was a red bellied snake curled up asleep, when I was a teenager I was surfing, not far out from the shore and saw a sharks fin swimming straight towards me (you learn very quickly the difference between a sharks fin and a dolphins !!!)and last but not least while in another part of Oz on the coast,me and my sister ran into the ocean. We were belly button deep, and looked down at the ocean floor, there were thousands of holes in the sand, and also loads of jellyfish coming out of them.If I can survive all that, and still come out unscathed so can you !!!!Good luck and be sensible !!!

I'm more bothered by the mossies and the bluebottles than spiders. Seriously, the mossies will drive you nuts and I hate jellyfish so swimming anywhere other than the pool is out.

Hi, we moved out here 9 omths ago, and I was as phobic as you about spiders mostly. But after a few months you learn what to look for and what their webs look like, i can even squash em now (eewww). We are renting a house that has bush at the back, and plenty of redbacks but although still v. phobic, have gotten much better! My daughter who is 9 tells me how to deal with the bugs!
hope this helps

Hi, In 3.5 years in Sydney, we had 1 redback and 1 huntsman both outside the house. Otherwise your normal household spiders. Get some cans of killer spray and go for it, even though the Huntsman will not hurt you...... Good luck
