need advice re proving older child dependant

my son is 19 and has just started an apprenticeship this week to be a carpenter part of his course is at college and partly working on site his wage is below the minimal wage expected for a 19year old. however we need to get him on our visa as we beleive he is dependant on us.

We had an email from an agent today who said it may be possible to get him on our visa if he is on the minimal wage stated by the Australian immigration, however we dont know what the minimal wage is in order for application. can any one help with this may be your going through a similar process.

would appreciate any info which may help.

we havent got an agent, was just seeking some initial advice as we think we can do all apaperwork ourselves as we have friends who have done it and reallt quite expensive. we are willing to pay to have maybe half hour to an hour with an agent to get this info.

We had some replies the othe day from various people, so i emailed one in london but was a bit vague with an answer, felt like they were really saying if you want more info from us then u need to pay. but just wondered if anyone else with similar experience

Hi Tracy .... Dont Know What Minimum Wage Is But We Are Going Through The Same Thing With Our Daughter ..... She Is 18 [19 In April ] And We Have Included Her In Our Application ..... She Is At College 3 Days A Week [which Is Classed As Full Time ] And She Has A Part Time Job In A Bar . We Had To Provide Letter From College To Prove She Was Attending / Copy Of Her Bursary Award ..... Someone Else Also Said Previously On A Thread That They Got Info From Local Rental Companies To Prove That Their Daughter/son Could Not Afford To Live On His Own Therefore Making Him /her Dependent On Parents . Hope This Helps

I'd be very surprised if any Migration Agents actually know the answer to this off the tops of their heads, and why should they research it for you for free?

Why don't you start with workplace.gov.au - Home ?? I wouldhave thought that would be the place to start in trying to discover what the minimum wage is in Oz. DIAC work on the assumption that the exchange rate is $2AUD to £1, by the way.

I suspect that the difficulty may lie not so much in what the actual minimum wage is in Australia but also with stuff like the idea that renting a bedsit may be more expensive in the UK than in Oz?

I think you may wish to reconsider your decision not to use an Agent because you could face an uphill - and potentially losing - battle with DIAC if you cannot get a successful outcome on behalf of your son.

Hi Tracy & John,

You could start by ringing AUSTRALIA HOUSE in london they are very helpful,it does cost £1 amin though but i think if you talk to one of their agents they will be able to help you.
We are also doing it ourselves and at the moment waiting for a case officer, so if you need any help i will try.

Hi Kaye .... As Far As I Can Remember Their Visa Was Granted And Included Their Son / Daughter So I Would Imagine Any Kind Of Extra Info Has To Be A Bonus .

Our daughter was 18 nearly 19 and a apprentice hairdresser when we applied, we supplied newspaper cuttings for flats to rent, council tax costs, gas and electric costs, food and all general day to day living expences and listed them all against her earnings to prove she was financially dependant on us. In the phone interview our case worker was also very interested in the fact that she still came on family holidays with us, we also stated that it would be splitting up the family and she had never lived away from home before.

I think they try to keep families together and dont just look at the financial side of things especially if they have brothers and sisters, it would be very hard to say her two 16 year old twin sisters could have a visa but she couldnt because she was 18.

Anyway she got her visa :)
