Is it a better life?
Hello POMS. The ultimate question.
We are thinking of moving for a better life, every one says it is a better life. Why is it a better life. I know financially its prob the same, that isnt the reason for us moving.
Like what makes it better than the UK, apart from the weather. We prob already know the answers but its confirmation and closure from you guys who are living the dream or not?
Thanks, Rogers Family.

Yes I think it is for most. The weather plays an important part of the quality of life. People are generally more positive about life. You'll likely live in a better house.
It's not a complete bed of roses though. You'll read some of the 'rose coloured specs' brigade postings. They're not often too objective. All the social ills exist here just as in the UK. Most of the differences between the two countries are small and trivial
I think the best reason for emigrating is "to give it a go & see". If it works out great, if it doesn't you won't die wondering. People who think they're leaving a c***p country to come to the 'paradise Australia' are probably the least likely to be contented.

what you're telling me that's it's not paradise,20 hr working week, everything is half price and i won't get a ranch for $50000 oh and the teenagers arn't angels
that,s blown it for me
no really i expect a bigger house same kind of job but less focus on a materialistic life style but more family orientated, presently i work 7 days most the time i expect that to stop i think the children will have a safer through austrailians being more positive rather than destructive like teenagers in this country, teenagers with an ambition probably sport will cause less trouble than children in uk climiate were the weather stop children hanging around with a football or skateboard or even surfing for 6 months of the year

Australians work on average more hours than poms, depends what you do of course.

i don't expect to much to be different as in work life you stillneed to earn money and raise the children but it's what you make it and we all have the chance to start from scratch

Hello the Rogers Family,
I would recommend you go for a holiday (for as long as you can) hire a car and travel round the area where you think you would like to live and rather than treating it like a holiday, of course enjoy yourself but also ask yourself is it a place you would like to live, if the answer is yes, great, if you are still unsure write all the pro's and con's down for staying and going! It takes a lot of communication between those involved prior to making the decision and if your decision is 'yes' be prepared for a lot of highs and lows whilst the application is being assessed. It isn't plain sailing but hopefully worth the blood sweat and tears in the end. My decision wasn't taken lightly and I have waited just short of two yrs before deciding to 'go for it'. Hope this helps Jo x

Hi Rogers Family!
I don't often post now..too lazy...but I read Fatpom's initial reply and I thought it was brilliant.
We all love our life here, although to be fair we loved our life in Tonbridge too!
The things that are the same are (for us!) the need to work, school (one child enjoys the sport, the other, the curriculum), our home isn't heaps bigger but it does have a pool (brilliant in summer, bit of a dead loss the rest!), the close community, the laid back attitude (I have no problem if people don't turn up 'cos the beach is calling), I love sitting outside by the pot belly stove chatting with friends, travelling within the state enjoying all our own backyard has to offer (you don't need to go abroad-even if you can afford it!), the wildlife (including the teenagers!), driving Aussie-style (it's kinda fun!), walking the dogs on the beach (except during bloomin' Daylight Savings), passing the time of day with total strangers, footy...I could go on, but since you're probably already asleep I won't bother!
I don't particularly enjoy trying to balance the books living fortnight to fortnight, could do with more insulation from noise (it can be a bit noisy in our backyard at times, but that's life- everyone sits outside and chats, kids play and I expect we cause as much noise as we receive -swings and roundabouts!), miss 'old' friends (but in the knowledge they're still there, just not as near), find fruit and vegies can be expensive- or cheap depending if they're on special (and not just if they're in season)...think that's it...
I reckon Fatpom was right - this is not paradise but I didn't find the UK cr*p. It's just life, just people and even a huge ocean won't change that.
Yours philosphically,
LC

I would have to agree 100% with Fatpoms comments .. Life is too short to wonder what it may have been like in Aus . Give it a go if you can , it's better to give it a go and not like it than not bother to try .

Thanks Dave & LC,
I often get the feeling that telling it like it is (or at least as I see it) isn't too welcome.
