I know everyone seems to love the cost of stuff ( am I the only person who Didnt research this)

its so subjective... Do you want the price if I shop at Coles or if I shop at spudshed ??

a four bed rental with pool like what we used to have $650 in the outer metro area..

half an hour south, you can pick one up for $450.

milk $3 for the large size.

public transport $ 11.20 to get to the city, same price if you buy an all day ticket. Weekends or holidays 7 people can travel for that price.

car insurance $10 a week.

fuel at the mo for unleaded hovering around the $1 mark.

the rest not a clue, it would all be different depending how many people in your household. But OH pays our bills.....I don't look:cool:

Ya reckon? Depends on cars and history, I just renewed for mine and it was $58 a month, Large car, with extras, hire car/windscreen and recovery plus named driver just had accident, I thought it was 'Ok'

I used compare the market....would have been about $43 without the extras....hubbys is $53 a month for a BMW coupe

We are in Cairns and a family of 5

Cost of a hotel?

In Cairns you can pick up a hostel for $25 per night. For a decent hotel you are looking around $200pn

Cost of Public Transport?

I don't use it, we don't have trains in Cairns so it's busses only or taxis. A taxi is around $40 for a 20min journey. You can find out more re the bus service here http://www.sunbus.com.au/sit_cairns.htm

Price of a coffee?

Dont drink coffee but a tea is around $4

Price of a Beer?

Pass

Price of a Loaf of Bread?

You can get a cheap loaf for a dollar. We usually get two mighty whites for $5

Price of Milk?

I use lactose free just the cheapest and its $1.95

Price of fuel?

Before I came away it had dropped from $1.55 to $1.25

Price of a 4 bed rental?

You won't find anything under $300. For an average house you are looking at $400 for anything nice then $600 up

Prive of a 4 bed house to buy?

Varies on which area of Cairns, can be from $390k to millions.

Electric costs per quarter?

Around $900 and we have solar

Gas costs per quarter?

$120

Water costs per quarter?

$20 ish

Rates per year?

I am sure it's around $3000

House Insurance?

If we had a average $500 access it would be $15,000 with a $5000 access we got it down to just under $3,000 per year. In Melbourne we paid $600 a year.

Car Insurance?

It depends on the vehicle. We have three cars at the moment as I'm trying to sell my sons, they range from $180 fully comp for the year, our Mazda 3 is $65 a month.

Internet?

with phone included it's $120

Food costs per week?

Not 100% on this and at the moment our figures would be out.

School Fees?

We pay for a private school so fees are around $7,000 a year then you have your usual book and stationary lists to add on and uniform which is expensive.

Please feel free to add to this list.

Interesting. Can I just add that not all insurance companies will have offices open on WA time. And there is some big names out there that only operate on EST. something to thing about.

ie if you have an accident after 2pm in WA, you may not be able to get hold of your insurance till the next morning.

Crikey Pom Queen ........ $900 per quarter for electricity! Our bill for the winter quarter was $300 and that included heating on for most of the day. Our water rates are a lot more than you pay per quarter though.

Tropical climate and air conditioning likely big factor up there. What I find very expensive in Cairns is the rates. It is double plus what pay here in Perth for some reason. Water has gone up considerably in recent years in Perth. A little surprised Devonport is so much more than Cairns. I would have imagined rain is plentiful in Tasmania.

Would it be useful for everyone to state their location, or a rough idea of which state and roughly whereabouts as prices do vary especially for housing. It might help people decide on a location.

I just did cheapest Brisbane option in general for house prices otherwise add 500K for a 4 bed and an extra $400 or so a week rent in my burb

Hobart is the second driest city in Australia after Adelaide. Devonport gets a bit more but we haven't had rain for a while now and so have had the sprinklers on the garden/lawn. The west coast does get a lot of rain - Queenstown is the wettest place and gets on average 2408 mm (94 inches) annually.
