Word Meanings... What Does It All Mean?

Hi All….

Here's one for you to get your thinking caps on for….

I recently noticed that when I jokingly called Samozsoon NESH on a recent posting…. a few of you didn’t know what Nesh meant…. So it got me to thinking about all the little words we use in everyday life that might not be understood by other people…. Then it lead me to think of all the words that are used in Oz…..!!!!

So I was thinking of writing a few down that I know of and was hoping that you could tell me some that you know…and hopefully expand my knowledge of the English and Oz language….

So here goes for my effort….

UK TERMS

· Nesh – To call someone Nesh you are jokingly saying they are cold blooded and can’t stand the cold…. ‘oh stop being Nesh’ (North West UK word)
· Bustin – To mean…Great Good …. From the Midlands
· Gennil – NW word to mean allyway (excuse spelling!!)

OZ WORDS

• Tinny– Can of beer/drink
• Roo – Kangaroo
• Barbie – BBQ
• Chook/Chuk – Chickens
• POM – UK person in oz

Can anyone confirm that a Billabong is a BIG pond???

In Yorkshire it's Ginnel - but diff is probably down to accent changes lol

Oz ones include:

Arvo (afternoon)
Bathers (swimming trunks)
Bonzer (great)

They're a few I remember from being in Oz - but found a slang dictionary and my fave has to be:

Brown-eyed mullet : a turd in the sea (where you're swimming!)
