Question Is it easy making friends in Oz?

Silly question I know as everyone is different and we are still in the process of gathering info for our TRA but am worrying about this already.

My hubby and I are hoping to go over around Sept 2009 with a 16 yr old boy, 13 year old girl and 4 year old girl. I have a stepbrother living near Fremantle but we don't know yet where we want to go so can't say for sure if we will be near them or not.

So scared we might be lonely and have trouble making new friends. We are friendly people (I think) and quite chatty and would make a real effort but was wondering how difficult it actually is to start friendships. How you did it, where you met people etc.

Please share your experiences (good and bad)

      Many thanks
      Andrea

      Hi Andrea,
I cant help you on the making friends in oz, but I can say that I have moved soooo many times in my life to and from this country and up and down this country and have never had any problems, if you are as you say you are I am sure you will have no problems making lots of friends, and you may even find someone on this site who may live near you,
DONT worry too much, just think that life is what you make it, and im sure you will make it great!!! (God that was a bit deep wasnt it.....Sorry!)

      best wishes

Hi, we are going to Perth in October this year. We have relatives out there but we probably won't see them much.

I know how you feel about the friends thing. I see my friends more than my relatives and it will be weird to think about making new ones.

Keep in touch about your application and we might see you over there in a year.

      Hi Andrea,
We have settled (for the time being) in NSW came over with my youngest daughter who is 13 - she has made loads of friends (& costs us a fortune always going somewhere lol) it is very easy for children to settle and soon get a great circle of friends (all the kids love nikki´s pommie accent)
Good luck sure you will all fit in fine

Don't worry your Christmas card list will soon expand even wider and yes they do have cards over here that have snow on them! If we can make lots of friends then I am sure you will too, as my hubbie is quiet shy really and finds it difficult to mix with new people.

I think in general that us pommes are the most friendliest and that some aussie's can be a little stand offish i have found but saying that many of my friends are all my school friends that i went to school with when i lived in australia many years ago. thru the years we have kept intouch and now being back in aus, we still catch up when ever we can. i have lived many years in australia thru my life and have found that if you make an effort then everyone else will, it just goes for everyone i recon. good luck with everything xx

I've found people here to be lovely, we've been invited to barbies of people who didn't know us. I started chatting to someone who I met on another forum, she's taken me out for a drink and introduced me to other people which has been great, so you may be able to nurture a few friendships on here for when you arrive. No one is in your face and you don't feel overwhelmed. Hubby is anxiously waiting for his golf clubs to arrive so he can play a round with lads at work. Kids have made friends, although I have to say I did go to a meeting about graduation for my daughters year and found it all a bit too clique for me
