I have seen a lot of Oz now, having been here ten years.
Depends what you want, I suppose....
If it is year-round summers, then QLD is the place to go... but the downside is sweatiness..... and the fact the the place is a social basket-case. If there is a "stupid" story on the telly...bet your bottom dollar its in Queensland. (The guy who paid $2000,000 for a run down house he had never visited, the hospiotal that kept a pensioner waiting on a trolly for 7 days, the town that voted for no water rather than recycled...
NSW is great, except for Sydney itself. Sydney is just a great big city...with some pretty bits. A great pleace to visit, provoided you can leave again.
Perth (not just Perth, but all of the lower part of WA, from Perth down to Albany and Esperence) are magnificent.... It is, however, a bit far-tremoved from teh rest of Autralia... A flight from Perth to Melbourne is three and a half hours... ....That would take you from teh UK to Turkey!
Adelaide... well... Again, nice to visit, but a bit like a big country town rather than a city...
Tasmania...Definitely God's country.... quiet. peaceful, green, and probably most like the UK of all States, but can be a bit on the quiet side too.
Canberra... A really great place. Most Aussies don't like it, because that's where the Politicians live...and lots of Government emplkoyees and Civil servants, but I think it is great...magnificent facilities, the best of all worlds...except for beaches, because it in inland.
My choice... still Victoria. One hour flight from Adelaide, Sydney, Tasmania, Canberra, and two hours from Brisbane... It has lovely hot summers, absolutely tremendous spring and autumn, and a definite winter (gets down to about 6 - 10C overnight, but the trees lose their leaves, and things really look like seasons.) Very European feel.
Second choice would be Canberra or regional NSW. ...and I might decide to retuire to tassie.
Geelong, Victoria's second largest City

Tough one first like yourself we had settled on the gold coast. But once back in the Uk everyone said have you been to Perth so hubby came out here and said YES!
And I agree most of the time its perfect especailly with a small family.Downside far from everywhere and costs a lot to get over East.
Job wise plenty.

I would pick Victoria too. I have lived most of my life in Oz and have visited/lived in all the states and also NT. I thought Perth was dreadful but that is me- boring place though stunningly beautiful of course and a great place as a holiday base. Queensland is lovely around Noosa, I could live there too but the heat would get to me in Summer. Darwin is tropically hot and you can't swim in the sea because of crocs. Canberra is like Perth- boring. Sydney you love or hate but is interesting and more of a big city. Adelaide is rather small and Hobart is gorgeous but a bit cold and not enough people yet. Also it is treated a bit like a poor relation I found when I used to live in Tassie.

Also it is treated a bit like a poor relation I found when I used to live in Tassie. I havent found that at all, the people that usually ridicule Tasmania are usually the ones that havent been. Its the country's best kept secret I think lol ss x

Having visited rellies in Perth many times i have to say i love it there. But, we decided it was too isolated and so we emigrated to the Gold Coast. In our opinion it was the right choice. It has the beaches, mountains(big hills) and 9 months of perfect 22 to 30 degree weather (the other three are rather hot and sticky). Surfers is bouncing and the big plus is there are loads of other beaches with bars and restraunts etc. Plus if you like the big city then Brisbane is only 45 mins drive or 60 mins on the train.

it is entirely normal i'm afraid... we too have struggled to grapple with this look.. The things to remember are that internal spaces are generally bigger than the average 3 bed semi in UK (for example) .... if the house is air conditioned then this internal space becomes more important for the majority of the year than garden space.. gardens tend to be solely for alfresco eating areas and pools.... If you look at the interactive maps on realestate.com you will see that most suburbs have lots and lots of green public space... parks, reserves, beaches, river picnic areas etc.... much more so than uk... this is where most aussies hang out ... also many of the roads are in residential quiet streets or cul de sacs and the local kids simply play footie in the street....
apologies tho.... I only have knowledge of Perth - not sure if the other state suburbs are layed out in the same way.
