A lot of American shows and on the extra freeview channels there is a lot of old reruns of UK shows, dads, army, the Bill, keeping up appearances, you name it and if its old enough you will find it.
SBS has some good documentaries and ABC is similar to the BBC. Some of the other channels it can be hard to tell when one program ends and another starts, I have watched a program and suddenly realised it had morphed into something else during an add break. If you have a recorder then you have to set it to start recording 15 min early and over run by at least 15 min, I do not know for the life of me how they do it, but every days the TV schedules are way out.
I believe you can get satellite TV for around $100 a month but not heard many good reports about that either. So all in all, pretty rubbish really, but if you search you can find some decent programs on some channels.

The ads are pretty dire, but Australia certainly produces some great drama "The Slap", "Killing Time", "Underbelly", some great factual "The Gruen Transfer", "Hungry Beast", "Q & A", great entertainment "Spicks & Specks", "Kath & Kim", "Rove LA"... and so on..

It is the editing that annoys me, the way they cut off to the adverts in the middle of someone saying a line in a film ! what is that all about ?
Also cutting to the adverts right at the end of a program just to go back for the end credits, weird !
We pay for iportal and play BBC, ITV etc and watch them on the big TV.

it's called squeezing whatever advertising revenue they can with absolutely zero benefit to the consumer. I think it's standard corporate practice in Aus

Depends on how much TV you want to watch. If you are happy with a few hours a week, as I am, its OK. If you want to watch 5 hours a night you might get a bit frustrated.
There are some good shows made here, and some decent imported stuff from the BBC. Its not all bad. And there is always Ticky Fullerton at 11pm.

I hardly watched any TV in the UK and we are managing fine with no telly at all just now! When the UK one turns up it'll primarily be a DVD monitor. That said I was happy to watch a double bill of The Big Bang Theory last week on Aussie TV, and the Tooheys Extra Dry ad was quite good.
