Help - peeps in Sydney and surrounds area need accomm for 6 nights

Hi my sister and brother in law are coming to visit us in Brisbane and want to go to Sydney for new year from 28 - 3 Jan. They have to go there as their flight is from there and cannot change it and need accommodation. They are willing and happy to pay for someone to put them up for 6 nights room only and they would be out most of time sight seeing. Could anyone put them up for a few nights? We've searched different accommodation but is coming up at 2k for a few nights and need cheaper options around $400 mark for 6 nights, is this realistic. They are happy to stay in someone's spare room. Any ideas anyone? They are early 30's no kids and good honest people.

They could not have picked a worse time to want to go to Sydney but I found a pub/hostel in Wollongong with availability. They would just have to get the train up to Sydney which is not too bad a trip - 90 mins I think. Wollongong itself is an interesting area - why follow the crowds too? I like the Wollongong area. They may still have time to rent a car too. Try Bayswater Car Hire in Sydney - very good value.

I found another pub/hostel on 'Hostel World', this time in Newcastle, another much under-related city, in my opinion. The beaches are superb and the riverside and even a little inner-city area not unlike 'big sister' Sydney. Some people do say that 'NSW' stands for 'Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong.'

Again, Newcastle is a couple of hours away from Sydney by train but there's a regular service. Probably extra services on NYE, although I would rather stay away from Sydney that night. Imagine enduring six hours or more of enduring crowds just for 15 mins of fireworks?

The Cambridge Hotel Backpackers is the newest addition to Newcastles No. 1 live music venue. We stayed here a few years ago, great backpackers, really clean $110 a night for a double ensuite. It's in the City near central station. Don't know about availability though.

I already checked the availability of Sydney hostels on that Hostel World website - never knew it existed until today either.

You mght get the odd night, also noticed that many of the Sydney hostels have minimum number of night restrictions at Xmas - usually at least nine?

I guess it's a combination of the school holidays and Xmas/NY and everyone wanting to watch the fireworks.

Last Xmas, Clovelly Beach car park was packed with backpacker vans 'camping', which I hope does not happen this year. I don't mind them being there so much as there are no proper toilet/shower/litter facilities apart from the usual beach ones.
