      fishing in oz

      Hi everyone,
We are moving to Brisbane in feb 12 and as I am a keen fisherman I have a few questions,
Can I take my fishing gear with me?, obviously not tackle, hooks, line, bait etc but my bivvy, rods, reels, bed chairs and the like.

Also I am in fact a Carp man and I have heard disturbing things about Carp fishing in Oz, can anyone shine some light on that for me?

      thanks for reading.

      HI Greg.

Are you sitting down my friend, bad new I'm afraid mate.

Though carp are a truly revered species in this country mate, they are vilified and hated in OZ, one is that as an introduced species they destroy the natural habitat and the other is allegedly their fighting ability mate.

There are VERY few anglers who specifically target them, those that do will more than often kill them.

They have been known to grow to 60 kilos in OZ mate, but are still very much frowned upon I'm afraid.

In one way you can understand it, as the Carp has indeed destroyed many inland waterways and played a key role in the decimation of the natural environment for the local specie mate.

Sorry to say, as a carp fishermen mate you will be one of very few who target them in OZ.

There are other freshwater species (indigenous) that you could target and these may well make up for the carp. But as far as Carp go mate, you could always fish for them, but no doubt I 'think' it may be law that they are killed when caught, I'm not sure on that last point mate, but someone will know better.

As for the rest of your kit mate, the rods and reels could come in handy for any saltwater fishing (light) that you may want to do.

But in honesty mate, you may have to become a saltwater convert, and all I can say about this type of fishing mate, is that I can only think of one other place that is on a level footing with this, and that is the Florida Keys.

The species available are truly astounding Greg, and you could spend a lifetime fishing Australia (saltwater) and never get bored.

Sorry for the doom and gloom mate, but it is the truth unfortunately, hope you have recovered and can learn to adapt my friend.

      Cheers Tony.

      fishing

      Tony,
thanks for the great reply, you were right, my wife made me sit down before reading it and I am glad she did. All the info is a great help if not a little saddening but I am willing to embrace the Aussie way and I will adapt.
Are there restrictions on bringing my fishing gear as i have used it a lot in the UK and was worried they wont let it through customs do i need it cleaned etc by a specialist?
      thanks mate

As long as cleaned thoroughly mate no problems at all, you can do it yourself mate and no problems at all my friend.

I was a huge carp fisherman before I went over Greg, bit soon enough got in the Aussie way, and by god glad I did mate.

Honestly Greg, you will have a ball over here, once over the shock of not being bale to fish for Carp.

There is a fella on here called Bobj Greg, and he is a HUGE Barramundi fisherman, more than make up for the Carp mate, and there are LOADS of places to go, impoundments and the like, great stuff Greg.

Bob will I dare say put up loads of info and some truly stunning pics for you Greg.

      Cheers Tony.

      Hi mate.

I know I thread way too long and boring to a degree, in my nature.

But fishing has been my passion since around seven, and have been very fortunate to have fished all over the world, I could thread and post for England/Aus about fishing mate, but fear it would even get more boring.

I love my fishing mate, and will continue my 'journey' to find my fishing nirvana,, so far Exmouth, The Bahamas, and Cairns are on my list.

I have tried to keep this short mate, honest,, but my love of fishing knows no bounds and was believe it or not THE main reason I first migrated.

      Cheers Tony.
