actually take it from somebody that actually knows and pays the bill every month I do pay the banks a percentage for every transaction that goes through my machine and we pay a rental and also the transaction fee in some cases we also had to pay for the stationary . So dwa 33 best get your facts right or indeed run a business and see what you make out of payment for a mars bar on EFTPOS or indeed a Latte.Obviously you are like the royal family dont carry cash!!!!

As I said above, I don't tend to carry cash, or at least i didn't until i moved here. There are places where cash is no longer acceptable as payment (certain restaurants etc) so complaining about the rarity of EFTPOS isn't exactly unreasonable.

I don't doubt what you are saying above but it seems that Aussies get a seriously raw deal when it comes to banking. I was shocked when I was told that cash machines woould charge me to withdraw money and just about fell over when I was told the bank would charge me to put money in!! It just suprises me when Aussies are usually 'non nonsense' about stuff like that. At the end of the day it's a convenience thing and I've taken my business elsewhere several times already because I couldn't pay by card.

Grief. I didn't realise that. Wonder why we can use eftpos so freely in NZ. I try to get out enough cash when I pay for my groceries but it's definitely handy to use an eftpos card anywhere for any amount. Seems odd that so many restaurants in Oz don't accept them.

Hi Sally, so what is the percentage you pay per transaction?

I guess getting back to the point of the original post it was to highlight that it's a shock to have such freedom from cash in NZ taken away when you get to Australia.

I do tend to shop where I can use EFTPOS regardless of the amount and more often than not it's well over the minimum. A single latte one day is more often on other days a few lattes and slices for the family and friends. So I would say the cafe more than makes up the money from my regular custom - unlike 'the cafe across the road' that makes it inconvenient and uninviting.

Perhaps the banking system in Australia is the same in NZ but the Kiwis just know how to keep a customer :)

Hi there I will check the rates when I go into the shop in the morning all the paperwork is there . I have to agree that the banking system over here is not as up to date as I was used to in the UK . I do get a bit niggled when I have to pay bank charges even when the acccount is in credit and believe it or not have to pay for a cheque book. The rates are high for the use of cards and so much so that I do not now take American Express complete rip off especially if someone wants a refund and I have to pay a fee for that to onot only when they purchase the goods but if they bring it back !

I think the point here is that the small business is paying the bank, the customer is paying the bank and the bank wins!

American express and Diners charge the business more for every transaction than the other credit card companies and YES I know we are talking EFTPOS and not credit cards, but it's pretty much the same anyway, the Banks WIN!

So the credit cards reap in the profits both ways from the consumer and small business, aswell as EFTPOS, if you use another ATM machine with your card my bank charges $2, so unless you want to go on a major hike to find your own banks machine you will have to decide is it worth the money?

I pay $0.19 per transaction plus $19.00 per month rental higher amount for credit cards and refunds are charged per refund So by the time someone has been paid to make the Latte, pay the rent ,rates and the stuff that makes the latte there isnt much left to call a profit ah and also there is that lovely GST
