Oz salary versues UK salary whats the difference
Hi
Please can someone advise me my husband is waiting a job offer in Newcastle in the next few days if he was earning a salary of $85,000.00 dollars in Oz is that the same as earning £85,000.00 dollars in Uk or just earning £35,000.00 sterling. We are thinking of moving with 2 kids and at present in UK cannot live off one salary. Could we have a comfortable life in Auz on a salary of $85,000.00????? Any feedback would be appreciated thank you... Also we are moving on a temporary residence visa how does the medical work out their?

Me and the wife with no family were on about that figure joint income and found it OK and could save a bit at the end of the month, Oz is more expensive overall then the UK, but you should get by quite easy on that salary.

85k sterling and 85k in Oz$ are VERY different. 85k$ is about 40k sterling.
Alldepends on the standard of life that you want out here.

Depends where you are going / how you live but in my opinion cost of living is much more expensive here. (in my opinion) Everything from schools, vegtables, medication, dental, licenses the list goes on.....
Attitude is a small thing that makes a big difference

Hi MariaL oh gosh there is a huge diff to the £'s and $'s , my hubby from ireland has lost loads in income since moving here he earns about $30,000 less then he was in Ireland, BUT in saying that the cost of living here is alot cheaper, the prices of houses are alot cheaper and say things like having the car rego( tax, insurance and stuff in the UK) is much cheaper here, and the lifestyle is good here in australia, depending on where u live.
Did your husband get the job in Newcastle? That is where my hubby and i live. And you could live fine with that salary here in aussie :)

Hi Tashy
Thank you for your reply. We are now just waiting on the job offer, if the package is right then we are going to go we have waited a long time for this, our life in the UK is very good but I want my hubby off night work and on days so we have a bit more normality in our life with the kids hence the reason we want to move. Our life here in UK is good but he works long shifts which is a killer. I have family out there my brother just moved from Ireland to Newcastle due to the recession being bad at home. I have 2 other brothers in Western Australia so won't feel lonely and I have been there a few times so loved the lifestyle.

Hi Tashy
How are you? Finally we have got the job offer in Newcastle and have accepted the job we are now waiting to be contacted by the visa office the company is allowing 4 months for us to get the 457 visa and they are sponsoring us. So please god all will go well and we will be in Newcastle in a few months. I am nervous and excited but it will be a great move for us all and husband will be on all day work which will be fab. We are not sure yet what part of Newcastle we are moving to as they will put us up in accommadation for a month. My mum in Ireland is upset as she will be loosing a 4 child to Australia but we will only be a flight away. Im going home to Ireland next week so it may be our last trip for a few years.
Kind regards Maria

We have 2 kids in private school and live on my wife's salary of 85.000 comfortably although we do have no mortgage. Try not to convert Oz dollars to sterling when looking at costs in Oz. This site will inform you of the medicare system: For Individuals - Medicare Australia
good luck

I disagree with an earlier reply and I think that it a lot cheaper here compared to the UK - except for cars they are very expensive

Hi,
i was surprised to here from others that they think the cost of living is higher in Oz than the UK. Just for instance gas and electric in the UK are about 1800 pounds which equates to about 4,000 oz dollars, the pound will bounce back soon. The equivalent in Oz is half of this cost and in some areas there will be no gas bills at all. Also the cost of petrol is half of the cost in the UK and our council tax bill is 1400 pounds which is again double what the rates are in Oz. Some will come on here and say other minor things will cost more in Oz but the major things cost alot less and they will also say that pay is less in Oz which it varies depending on what you do, the real difference though is that there are jobs to get in Oz but there are hardly any in the UK and companies are reducing wages due to the recession and thats why there are a load of strikes at present. So i agree fully with the quote above. jim
