Havn't lived there since 1975 but visited a few time. You have access to some of the best beaches in Australia, no make that the world. Port Stephens is not far. Yes I could live there again and I saw on TV a travel show showing fantastic beachside restaurants and stuff. Nice weather but was 41.5C there yesterday.

Is a lovely area to live, with gorgeous beaches, nature reserves, good restaurants and friendly people! If you are into the outdoors, then this is a good location to go!

It is a fairly large town and being located just off a freeway, travel to many other places is easily accessible. Additionally, there are trains and buses that run within Newcastle itself throughout the day/night.

There are supermarkets dotted all over the place and there are two large shopping complexes at Kotara and Charlestown. Nice little parks throughout the place as well to go for walks and have picnics in.

I have a little nephew currently in pre-school in Newcastle and although I'm not an expert on these matters, from what I could tell, the schooling system seems pretty much the same to the UK, and they have high standards in teaching.

Let me know how it all goes and if you do choose Newy as your final destination! :-)

I have just this second booked our flights to Sydney, we too are looking to move to Newcastle, I have had an offer of a job there but none of us have ever been to Oz before. While we are there my wife is going to see if there is any chance of a job for her, she is a support worker in domestic violence & my 18 yr old daughter works in child care. We also have a 15 yr old so we will be looking at the schoolling.

Excited and nervous all at the same time:wacko:

If anyone has any info it will help

Cheers Dill

Hi there,

Newcastle is a beautiful place to live. I grew up here and know it very well. My husband (who is English) and I moved back here about two years ago when we decided to have a family, because it is a great place to raise kids.

We live in the Lake Macquarie area - Valentine/Eleebana, it is about a 20 minute drive from Newcastle CBD, it has great schools, both public and private in the area, all with very good reputations, beautiful parks, right on the lake, lots of sports clubs & activities for the kids, the people are very friendly and it is a safe area. Having said that, there are loads of other beautiful spots in Newcastle to choose from!

If you have any other questions please feel free to message me. :-)

Cheers,

Suze

Hi there,

I have just secured a job in Newcastle. I also have been told lake Macquarie is a lovely place to live. Can anyone give us ideas where is good/not good to live?/ If we don't sell our house soon we will be activating the visa in June so it would be great to know where to start on on our fact finding mission!! Oh yes we also have 3 boys 7, 5, and 3. so schools are also an issue for us. Thank you everyone!

Hi there,

My huband came out in August last year to start his new job in Newcastle whilst myself and the children stayed in the UK until the house was sold,so he had time on his hands to do his research and also to determine weather or not to make the big move.He looked at all the schools in the suburbs of Newcastle anf found that Eleebana was the best performing school in the region and we were lucky that the area is lovely,we're right on the lake and only about 10 mins away from the beach.I would definately recommed Eleebana/Valatine areas.

Hi there,

We arrived in Newcastle just before Christmas and have settled in New Lambton Heights. We went to visit the school in Eleebana and it is just the loveliest school, the staff were really helpful and friendly, the head went out of his way to give us info, and the grounds are fabulous. Unfortunately for us, we couldn't get a house there quickly enough so are in New Lambton Heights instead. Having said that, this is also a lovely area, closer to Newcastle itself and also very good schools, I can actually hear my younger two at recess right now in the field of their infant school next door! My older two go to the Public School in New Lambton which has the highest number of children passing the exam for the selective high school in Newcastle. This appears to be a topic of hot debate with parents who are concerned that their kids are only being taught to pass an exam. Fair point, but mine seem very happy so far and could probably do with a bit of that kind of discipline anyway.

I know that cjdamoo has her boys at Kotara South Public School and is very happy there. It seems to me that the majority of schools here have a good reputation and it really boils down to which suburb you would prefer - beach, lake, town etc, and how long you want to take to get to work. From where we are nowhere is more that 10 mins away in the car. It takes 9 mins to the uni by car and it takes my husband 26 mins door-to-door on the bus. Much better that the 80 mins he was doing previously.

Good luck with your decisions, you can't go too far wrong here!

Hi there as Sandra said above we arrived just before her and settled in Kotara. excellent for a non driver like myself if you can get to grips with the hills! We looked at 3 schools and all were very good. Loving it so far despite bouts of London sickness

Hi there,

We're new to PIO. Just noticed this thread and thought i'd ask a few questions?

We're moving to Newcastle 1st July. We'll be staying with family in New Lambton for a few months till we find our feet. We would like to know how hard was it to find jobs? Am a chef and my GF is a Biology Teacher.

Thanks

Thanks. Things are slowly all coming together .. there is just so much to organise! What do you do work wise in Newcastle? Did you find it easy to settle in / meet people??

Working out at the university. As for settling, going fairly well. Making friends and that is slow but so far it's been quite good. I didn't have major expectations really coming and thought it would be difficult the first few months but they have been fairly good. If you want to ask me anything drop me a pm and I can give you my email.

Hi All,

My husband and I together with our children moved here 2 weeks ago from Birmingham. Things are really hectic and i would love to hear from a fellow brit. I have managed to get son (6) registered with a school but just found out that the department for education and training need to process it and that could take up to 2 weeks. If anyone has any ideas how to speed this process up? I alm also having difficulties getting my 4 year old into pre-school without it either costing a fortune or joining a waiting list. She has gone from 5 days full time in the UK to 7 days a week with me!!

Looking forward to anyone's response
