I am thinking about doing a recki August 2009, starting in Sydney hiring a campervan and driving the route to Brisbane. Hoping to do this over 2 weeks with an extra week in Sydney staying with family before the trip. Have chosen this time of year because I'm a teacher and it is the only time of year I get this length of time off. My question is what is the weather like this time of year? OH is a bit concerned that we will be spending £5000 for a holiday and the weather could be miserable. What would all you lovely, helpful people reccommend? Also any pointers of where to put on our list of places to check out?
Hi,
Its approx a ten hour drive from Sydney to Brisbane give or take a little, Sydney in August can be chilly as its the last month of winter, but brisbane will be alot warmer then

It's a lovely drive Loobie, once you get out of the Sydney area that is, you will pass through & see places like Coffs Harbour, you could get a map of the east coast of Oz, pick out some places that are not far off the beaten track & look at them on pleasetakemeto/australia
We've done that trip a few times over the years as one of our sons lived in Brissy for a couple of years, take a jumper just in case, I listened to the Queensland, wonderful one day & perfect the next and had to buy warm clothes when we got there.
No matter how cool it may get here in those months, you hot blooded Poms will think it's more like Summertime anyway, have a good holiday.
Thanks for that guys...seems like it may be a little chilly then. Unfortunately, hot bloodied I'm not! The thought of walking back from the shower room, on some camp site, with wet hair, on a chilly day, makes me start sneezing at just the thought!! Errmmm...may have to rethink plans. Will have to see how Easter falls, see if i can wangle 3 weeks away from school...Would March/April be more ideal?
Thanks Skippy for the direction, may call on you again for ideas of places to check out, if you don't mind?
Loobie, the weather patterns these days are like a lottery, last week I was cold, today I got sunburnt, some years ago my brother came out here in March, it peed it down for 2 weeks, he then went to Cairns to see the Barrier Reef, the water was so muddy because there had been a lot of rain up there also, so he did'nt see any coral etc, but at least he saw a waterfall that hadn't run for many years.
It's not cold here by English standards, going north is going into the tropics, so it should be warmer than Sydney, places to see on the way up, Port Maquarie, Coffs Harbour, & the most eastern part of Oz, Byron Bay, it's a nice view from the lighthouse there, then if you take the coastal route from there and go through Brunswick Heads, Kingscliffe, Tweed Heads & Coolangatta, you will get a good idea of what the areas are like.
The places we saw in Queensland that we liked were Tambourine Mt, Glasshouse Mts & the beach at Noosa, the Currumbin bird park was nice too, liking & loving particular places is a personal thing, I am quite happy living in our little bit of Paradise, the Illawarra, it's only just over an hour south of Sydney, a good day trip for anyone, same as Katoomba, a few hours west of Sydney, when you live here, you tend to take things for granted, especially sun, sand & surf.
Take a look at the pics on the Illawarra thread.
