Thanks for all the comments, very much appreciated. I am somewhat concerned about the rental position- 60 people turn up to look at a place!? Is renting that much oversubscribed? I can imagine stepping off the plane to start our brand new life and spending a month trying to just rent somewhere

I don't wanna dis hearten you & im not sure of the current situation up to this time, but a couple of months ago there was a big report on the local news about the renting situation in Sydney suburbs & how peeps were queing to view properties, if theres anyway you can get your foot in the door (via a relative or friend) before you land here it may be a good idea
all the best

Bloody hell. Thanks for the heads up, we may have to rent well out of Sydney to start with, but we don't want to have to move our little one in and out of different schools when we switch places to rent.

That was just my experience folks!

From what I've read, less than 1% of rental properties in Sydney are available at any one time. That still means hundreds and hundreds of places though. At home you can generally book a time to see a place, see a few more and then make a second visit. You can't here. I asked to arrange a time outside the 15 minute viewing period and the estate angent looked at me like I was on fire. Several of the 2 bed places we looked at in Paddington, Crow's Nest, North Sydney etc had at least 20 couples turn up for the 15 minute viewing (some had many more than that). In every case people filled in applications on the spot. Apparantly offering x amount over the rental price is fairly common and can help secure a place as can offering 6 months rent in advance.

Despite all that we still got a place inside 2 weeks. It's entirely possible, just a little different to home.

Smile renting sydney

Been here a week. Have a beautiful property in sutherlandshire to move into. when you go to estate agent ask what they have and then ask DO THEY HAVE ANYTHING COMING UP if so, and your refs are good, u can get a foothold before it is advertised.

take with you passport visa, i.d. employment offer with salary noted, references from u.k. police check if u have it. any good qualifications, degree certs, nursing certs etc, anything to prove u are moving to OZ..shipping bill, new car sale documents.

Hope this helps
