How much to get by on

Hi guys

Another hypothetical one.
Might have a job offer in Sydney and will be looking to live up in Terrigal area.
Initial salary may be circa $50K. We would rent a house not too interested in buying and have 3 kids all under 10.
Would we manage on 50K with any benefits etc we might be entitled to?
We are on NZ passports.

Personally I think I'd really struggle on that and there are only two of us. A quick look on realestate.com shows 3 bed proporties around Terrigal for about $270-310 a week at the cheap end of things, so that's nearly $15k a year just for rent. It's also about a 2-hour commute each way if you are going to be working in Sydney, which is a pretty serious fuel expense.

It's probably doable of course but I think it would be bloody hard.

Hiya
Would definately be very tight on that sort of wage. Although, if your on a Permanent Residency visa, on a low income with kids then you may be elegible for family assistance.

Heres the link to the calculator to give you a rough idea: https://secure.centrelink.gov.au/Rat...OriginName=FAO
Good luck

Would we qualify for family tax benefit if we are on NZ passports and would the kids still get free school?

Hi Kenpom,
We are currently renting in - a 3 bed detached villa with bathroom, sep loo and also an ensuite,lounge/diner/kitchen all in one, laundry and huge garage, very large gardens and driveway to park 6ish cars.$340 week.
I guess alot of the other expensives depends on what sort of clubs the children will join, if you want foxtel, internet etc etc.
Depending on what part of Sydney you may be working in - it could be cheaper to get the train from Gosford on a yearly/quaterly (not sure how they work it) reduced rate ticket. Also depending what part of Sydney then theres the toll to take into consideration - see Paying tolls

guess untill you are here & up & running - going to be hard to judge your costs.
But hope this helps a little

I have been looking at the immigration site but it is very extensive and finding the right bits and bobs isnt too easy.
