I'm after advise about where to live in Central Coast having had a flick though messages Gosford doesn't seem to be great?? A bit worried it'll be really quiet live in large city now so need some life, but want it quieter than Sydney! Fussy I know!!
I've got 2 young kids who'll be 5 & 4 when we go and I'll be a newly qualifed nurse (currently training) hubby a gas fitter/plumber so assuming wouldn't have to travel to Sydney to work?
Also is there any other newly qualified nurses going to oz I've heard you need 3-6 months working experience before you can go has anyone found their inexperience a problem either looking for work or passing skills assessment??
Hi my husband and I live in Gosford.
He is a panel beater and he travels to Hornsby everyday. We love it in Gosford. Its close enough to the city, yet not to close. It has some lovely beaches nearby. I can send you some pics. my email is: karlandliz@bigpond.com
I am a newly qualified nurse and I'm going to work on the Gold Coast. I have six month experience, but they offered me the job before I qualified and were happy to take me with no experience as at the time it was not looking likely that I would be able to get a job locally. If you already have your visa lined up I suggest that you get in contact with the nursing board for your area and find out what they require so that you can get all the paperwork in order before leaving the UK. I had to provide a break down of what was covered on my course, two reference, one from my tutor and one from practice as well as the usual identification and certificates of achievement for my degree. Be aware that some states don't recognise the nursing dipolma and look for degree level qualifications only. I believe that there are ways round this once you get here, the nursing board for your area should be able to answer these questions.
Gosford area is becoming quite a large 'City' now (I say City as thats' what it's called) However it isn't anything like Sydney, there are loads of beaches, not much in the way of nightlife, but plenty of social clubs and restaurants about, housing is much cheaper than Sydney too.
Your Hubbie may have to commute to Sydney for work although there are plenty of Plumbing companies on the coast, most houses have only electricity, although new estates have the option (I wish I did!) There are several hospitals on the coast and also further North in the Hunter region.
I will be honest with you......I am so glad I came to the Central Coast, Sydney is so hectic for travelling and sometimes it can take a long time to commute through the suburbs. Gosford used to be quite the country town when we arrived, although now a lot of Sydneysiders have moved up here over the years so it's quite populated now. Couple of huge shopping centres and plenty of smaller ones for grocery shopping.
The children will find plenty of things to keep them occupied and yourselves of course. I hope this info helps you out.
Sorry I can't advise on the nursing side of things for you, but there is a thread for Nurses on here, so they should be able to help you out I'm sure.
Queensland is one of the states that expect nurses to be qualified to level 3 (degree level). Best thing to do is to check with the nursing boards for the states you are interested in living in and get some advice as I am led to believe there are ways round this. I think it may also depend on how long you have been qualified and the experience you have.
hi emmy im hoping to do excatly the same as you and wondered if you could give me a quick run down of what youve done and your times for aplying etc? when did you contact hospitals when did you send off for the visa etc? any help would be gr8

LIFES NO REHERSAL, GRAB YOUR CHANCES WHILE YOU CAN AS YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE!
I contacted Queensland Health (put it in a web search and you'll find the site) early June 2007 three months before I qualified. I sent a copy of my CV and explained that I was about to qualify as a nurse in the UK. They interviewed me in July and made a provisional job offer there and then. I had to wait for my PIN and degree certificates before applying for registration with the QNC (Queensland Nursing Council - site also comes up on web searches) getting my registration took about ten weeks because the NMC messed up, should take about 6 weeks. My advice regarding getting registeration in Oz is to get all the information together while you are waiting for your degree certs and contact the NMC to get the forms filled in for them to give your registration details to QNC when the time comes (NMC charge £35 for this...rip off!). As soon as I got my QNC reg I contacted my contact at Queensland Health and they started the ball rollling for my Visa (457 visa sponsored by them). From receiving my QNC registration to getting my visa took approx 3 and half months. Getting the TRN from Queensland Health took longer than expected due to the high number of applications at that time. I applied for the visa on line once I received my TRN and that took a less than a month after they received my medicals.
Hope this helps, if you have anymore questions feel free to PM me.
Luv Mxxx
