Renting in Sydney

I've seen many ads of sydney gumtree, domain and realestate but I want to know, is it a competitive market? In particular I'm looking around the CBD area and surroundings (my college near Central Station), so... Haymarket, Ultimo, Glebe, Chippendale, Redfern, Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Pyrmont, Woolloomooloo, Kings Cross... anybody have any experience in these areas?

I'm also debating whether it would be better to be near the CBD (i.e. all the places I listed above) or move out west, 'cause it's cheaper, and to commute? The furthest I'd look at going would be Parramatta... After that I'd probably get annoyed with commuting

Another thing I found was there were so many offers for Bondi/Marouba! Ok, most is shared for backpacker types, but it seems cheap! I wouldn't mind commuting if I'm near the beach! How far is Bondi from Central by train? Marouba doesn't seem to have a train station Hmm... what's it like there anyway?

Good luck with the renting, we came over in September and it took us 6 weeks to find a house. The system here is very different to the Uk. Basically you have to view a property on a specified open day along with all other interested people. Then you put in an application along with anybody else interested in the property. Then you wait to see if your application is succesful, if I am correct the final decision is made by the owner not the agent.

I was advised by a sydneysider to avoid Redfern (it has had some trouble between the police and aboriginal people living there). Kings Cross is an area with prostitutes and drug addicts. Parramatta is horrible, think Chavs (or Westies as they're called here) and a sprawl of roads and ugly buildings and that's Parramatta.

We stayed in Cooggee when we were looking for a house and that wasn't too bad for getting into the City. Bondi would be okay as well. I preferred Bondi and Coogee to Maroubra.

I have been told that Balmain, Leichardt and basically all inner west suburbs are good.

Good luck with it all

I assume that you are going to study at UTS. There is student accommodation in that area.
