Pensioners in North Sydney.

Hello,
Im posting this on behalf of my mum who isn't brilliant when it comes to using the internet as much as i've tried to teach her in the past.
My brother moved to North Sydney with his fiance(who's an Ozzie by birth)and their baby last September. My mum who is divorced moved to Oz about a month ago on her own and moved in with them while she found her own flat. She now has her own flat and i think she is going to stay in Oz for a while.
My question is does anyone on here know what groups/websites/forums/clubs/societies are available in North Sydney that would suit a 60 something expat on her own?I suggested she should possibly look into doing voluntary work as she has just retired but not sure if she would be allowed to do that kind of thing out there.
Any help at all would be great!
Thanks in advance...Damian.

Hi Damian

Voluntary work is a good way to make friends, as you say.

Also, they have Seniors Clubs in almost every suburb. These clubs are brill - they are usually open all day once or twice a week. Sometiems but not always they are based in Retirement Villages.

At these Cllubs the seniors can usually play cards, pool, lawn bowls, sometimes tennis and/or mini golf, often there is a licenced bar ad usually food and if course they can just sit around and chat if they prefer.

A friend's parents are in Oz at the minute on their second six month visit. They plan to move to Oz permanently as soon as they can. The local Seniors Club has been brilliant for them because they've made their own friends of their own age, so that don't feel that they are riding on their daughters' social coat-tails. Also, Lisa's Dad is keen on cricket and to start with he was going to matches on hisown. Other men at the Seniors Club turned out to be keen on the same matches so now they arll go to them together, in a posse. Meanwhile Lisa's Mum goes shopping with/meets other ladies from the club for coffee etc.

The club really is doing wonders to help them to feel that they are becoming a genuine part of Ausrtalian society rather than being mere bystanders watching somebody else's show as it were.

Cheers

Gill

I have just found and and joined the Red Hat Society - great way to meet other ladies - all stems from a great poem about growing old. The Red Hat Society Official Website

We have a centre called The Autum Centre (doesn't sound quite so bad as Seniors!) where they have a huge variety of activities and so cheap.

Hi Cheryl, I just had a look at that site, it looks really good, I hope to be following my daughters out to somewhere round the sunshine coast, my biggest reservation has been if I will be able to make friends and find things to join in, it is so much more difficult on your own. But looking at that site has allayed some of those fears, there seem to be quite a few chapters in that area. Would be interested to hear of your experience of it, if you don't mind.

regards

Cat

Hello Cat - glad you found the link helpful. I live in the Rockingham area of WA and because a bunch of us had individually contacted one of the existing Red Hat groups which was full the Queen Mother of that Chapter brought us all together and explained how the society works and we set up a new Chapter, we are calling ourselves the Raspberry Ripples! Anyway, we have just had our inaugural meeting to finalise the name and will be meeting again to go up to Perth in a couple of weeks to the Red Hat Shop - in the meantime we are all scouring the local Op Shops for Purple clothing and Red Hats!!! All great fun - will be arranging outings, meetings etc as we want - great way to make new friends. All the best to you in the Sunshine Coast. I love it there but the drier climate here in WA suited my OH's asthma better. Hopefully be visiting Noosa again one day soon.

Regards, Cheryl

Hi Cheryl

I hope Damian won't mind me butting into his thread, but I have just read your new post with interest.

My Mum is 87 and a group like the Red Hat Society would be brilliant for her, I believe. However, Mum is disabled after breaking her back some years ago. She can hobble a few yards on a level furface (eg indoors at home) on a Zimmer frame, but beyond that if she wants to go out and about she needs her wheelchairand a kind person to push it for her.

Mum lives in Jandakot, SOR in Perth. I'm not sure if that is anywhere near Rockingham? Jandakot is where the old Perth airport is, now used by the RFDS, the water-bombers and similar, I believe.

Mum can't drive, and for her to go out with anyone other than my sister's family (with whom Mum lives) we would need to be able to arrange for a kind lady (to collect Mum and drop her off, plus we would need to be able to give the said kind lady a key for the house so that she could let herself in in order to collect Mum for outings etc. During term-time, Mum spends all day at home on her own during the week because my sister & bro in law are out at work and their children are at school.

If Rockingham is too far from Jandakot, I am wondering whether you could provide me with some information about who to contact to find out whether Red Hat has a Chapter closer to Jandakot and if so, whether I could arrange something for Mum via them? Since I am in the UK, not kowing the geography of WA well doesn't help. A map doesn't tell you anything about likely traffic conditions etc.

Mentally, Mum is ALL there! Her disability is only because she broke her back. She has to be pushed a bit to get her to go out other than with family because firstly she feels conspicuous and secondly she hates to feel that she is burdening people, slowing down whatever they want to do etc. (Try as we might to tell her that decent folks do not consider it a burden to help a disabled old lady!) She would insist on paying for any petrol involved and she would also insist on buying lunch etc for her helper whilst out. The best thing would be to let her pay, so that she doesn't feel she is not giving something back.

Mum LOVES Op Shops! There are 3 in the villege where I live in the UK and it is hard to keep Mum out of them when she is here with me! She loves car boot sales as well (Swap Meets, I gather?) though if they are anything like the ones in the UK, it is not a ladies' game with the wheelchair. If the ground is rough one needs a man with the brute strength to get the wheelchair over stones etc.

Also, whenever Mum is in the car with me on our own, I keep a sharp eye out for passing men! If there are any around, I get them to lift Mum's (folding) wheechair into and out of the car for me. It is not heavy but it is an awkward cuss to handle at times!

Mum can use trains or buses as long as they are adapted for wheelchairs. Where they are, the people in charge always know how to secure the wheelchair so that it can't possibly move and so forth. One can more or less leave them in charge of this bit.

Many thanks for any suggestions that you might be able to offer. I would be very grateful indeed.

Cheers

Gill

Hi Gill - Jandakot is a bit away from us here in Rockingham but why don't you go on the The Red Hat Society Official Website website and do a search for Chapters nearer where your mum lives, nearer Perth. I haven't done a search myself but it must be reasonably easy as my cousin who lives in New Zealand was able to find out where her nearest Chapter was. The one I belong to has only had one meeting so far and I have only lived here a few months myself so am still feeling my way round. If you still have difficulties get back to me, either via this or PM me and I will ask the Queen of the other Chapter in Rockingham to see if she knows of one in or near Jandakot. I am going to Phuket for a week so won't be around until week of 24th - good luck with your search.

Cheryl

I did a search for Sunshine coast area, it was really easy and came up with quite a few. Gives you the option to contact them as well.

regards
