Where to live in Sydney

Hi,

Does anyone have any info on the suburbs of sydney?
I know there are heaps of websites but wondered if anyone had any printable info i could get a copy of so i can print it oit for my mu. I got a great where to live in Melbourne guide and was hoping of something similar.

My mum was originally hoping to go down he PV route but the timescale and cost involved would make it very much in the future before she joined us in OZ. However she has just returned from visiting my sister in Queensland and managed to get in touch with an employer in her line of work who have offered her a job and will sponsor her on the 457 visa. So looks like she will be there before us in the end.

Her work will cover pretty much Sydney and suburbs so she wanted to do a bit of reading herself and asked if i could help.

Any info is much appreciated. I am also browsing the websites

Thanks in Advance

Sydney

I just 'googled' my suburb 'Surry Hills' and some interesting info came up then I realized that it's part of a Sydney website - City of Sydney Homepage You could also look at Sydney Morning Herald - Business News, World News & Breaking News in Australia the Sydney Morning Herald site and look at the 'Domain' page for real estate info - renting/buying etc.

I liked living in Surry Hills because it's close to the city/public transport but some people prefer to live further out in the suburbs or closer to the beach. Cronulla is good because it's a beach suburb with a train connection to the city. Manly is good because it has the ferry connections to the city too. Then again, there's something to be said for picking a suburb close to wherever you are going to work.

Dave
ps I'm in the UK now so can't tell you anything up to date but I own a home in Surry Hills

Nice to see more Yorkshire people moving to Sydney - but it's difficult question to answer your request briefly. Sydney is just so big, it's like asking which suburb of London to live in. For a family I would say you should probably be looking at the northern suburbs or even Central Coast (unless you can afford to pay London level prices to live in the inner city or Eastern suburbs). The north shore and northern beaches are great, again if you can afford the house prices. We have two kids and we had to compromise by going for a flat in the inner west - because we like the cafes, pubs, bookshops and cinemas etc as well as having good public transport links. A lot of the outer suburbs are sterile "McMansion" estates with no shops or public transport. You need a car to go anywhere.
But to give any more advice you really need to say what sort of place and lifestyle you are looking for and what your budget is.

Thanks for your replies,

Really my mum is just there to please herself really. As long as she has good transport links ie, trains as her work will be all around sydney and subs. She's been advised to maybe just move week to week from motels as she'll get her rota a week in advance and it may work out cheaper to just stay for a week in a motel in the area she will be working in. She'd have to travel light if she did this. I know i wouldn't like to

I'll do a bit more digging with her.
Thanks again

Hi Jo
I've been living in Sydney now for 16 months, East Botany (part of the Eastern Suburbs) but it's hard to advise on other places as don't know what your Mum is particularly looking for and what her budget might be. If you can come up with any definite requirements I'll try and help.....or if there's anything else I can advise with please ask
Karen

Hi Robert,
I've lived in Sydney for twenty one years before retirement brought us here to Port. There are so many lovely suburbs, that are too numerous to mention. We lived on the north shore initially, before building on a new land release in the hills district. Both areas were well serviced with transport to the city, as there's a huge amount of people who commute to the city for work.

I don't think that living out of a suitcase, and moving from motel to motel indefinitely, would be a good long term position for anyone to be in. After a day at work, you want some home comforts to relax you. After initially looking around, another option she might like to consider, and which is widely used here, is house sharing. People share their homes to help with costs, and also other tenants sub let rooms as well. This way her outgoings would be very much cheaper, and she'd still have her own privacy, but a proper home too. Local papers are the place to see these ads.

Hope this helps, and if I can help further, just shout.

Hi there,

Please may I be so rude as to ask how old your Mum is? I would hope this would be the case for my parents, but they are 56 and I was under the impression they had to be under 55, I am very much hoping I am wrong.

hi, she will be 50 this year - as far as we are aware there are no age limits on the 457 visa
