Hi everyone. We are a couple, late 30's with no children moving to Sydney in May and need to figure out where to live - not easy as we have never been.
Let me tell you a bit about us. I will be working away from home for two weeks at a time - I'm a geologist in the mining industry, so the area has to be safe as my partner will be alone. We would like to be near a beach, but not essential, but must have everything that we might need such as restraunts and shops. Our budget is a max of $450 per week rental
Any advice would be very welcome.
Thanks Chris

Northern Beaches- Balgowlah,Fairlight,Curl Curl,Freshwater/Harbord, all fit in with what you seem to be after and from first hand experience I can say they are all top spots.
A fellow geologist here (although I'm working as an engineer).
I'm moving over in January with my wife and we're looking at places in Bondi, Paddington, Darlinghurst, Manly and North Shore (Crows Nest and Neutral Bay area). These are all fairly central and there are loads of palces for around the $450 mark on http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rsearch?s=nsw&t=ren&snf=rbs&a=sf -this site.

be warned all the areas your talking about are backpacker hotspots, property for 450 will be pokey ,ontop of you neighbours, probably a courtyard only and as we found not very well maintained, saying that you are right in the middle of the action so if thats what your after then its a good place to look. Neutral Bay is good for the city and has loads of ammenities, Manly is great but again during the summer months think pissed Poms on holiday and schoolies celebrating finishing thier HSC.
Thanks everyone for your help. We are also getting the impression that we wont get much for our money in the central areas. We have looked at Manly, and as Sainthurlock has pointed out, not only are prices high, but we arent keen on the idea of been swamped by drunken partying - we are the sort of couple who appreciate going out for a meal, and i cant remember the last time i was in a nightclub. Being out of the city isnt a big issue, as long as there is good public transport, as my wife doesnt drive. All advice is very much appreciated
Thanks, but two hours is probably too far out, as my wife will need to find work in Sydney and there are times when i will need to work in the office in Sydney
Cronulla isn't a bad place to live, right on the ocean, and plenty of trains into the city, not sure what rents are like in that area, but rents are going up all the time now because of the interest rate rise.
Hi
I lived in Elizabeth Bay for a few month a few years ago which was great but a bit near the Cross, so probably not ideal for safety's sake. In the eastern suburbs you could look at the Darling Point, Rose Bay, Double Bay along the harbour shore or Bronte, Tamarama, Clovelly on the coast (not sure of the rents)
On the lower north shore try Cremorne, Mosman. They are close to Balmoral beach. You could try Balmoral itself. Those areas have the restaurants etc but are pretty quiet. They're also quite expensive but you could probably find a decent apartment for $450.
