Living near Chatswood NSW

I'm a bit rusty with advice about Sydney as I've not lived there for a decade although I was there for eight months in 2006. I've decided to (re) emigrate there next year which is why I have joined this site. I hope I can develop the enthusiasm that many of you have.

Forestville, St Ives, and Epping are all OK. I think I'd prefer St Ives or Forestville simply because they are closer to the Northern Beaches. Epping has a station but it's not on a direct route to Chatswood. The other two have no station so it would mean bus or car.

My suggestion would be to live close to one of the stations on the North Shore line either north or south of Chatswood. Chatswood has a station by the way, perhaps you could consider living there? - 15 to 20 mins to Sydney??? North of Chatswood, Roseville, Lindfield, Killara, Gordon, Pymble, all have stations (been checking thru my old Sydney 'Gregory's' Street Directory trying to re-acquaint myself) I made this suggestion I must admit because I HATE commuting. My own home in Sydney is in Surry Hills just south of the city, bus at the door, 5 mins walk to Central Station. I'm thinking of moving out close to my brother at Picnic Point south west of the city on the East Hills line, nice area but too far to commute to Chatswood!

Dave

ps I went out to OZ the first time in 1978, flew to Singapore, ship to Freemantle, Perth to Adelaide to Sydney on the Greyound Bus, lived in Sydney till '96 when I was made redundant and came back to UK for a holiday and I'ved stayed.

Thanks for that, is the train service like the tube every couple of minutes or more of a specific timetable every 30mins or so. Any areas to avoid, Surry Hills looks nice but i thought would take a long time to get across to Chatswood.

I've been 'googling' Sydney buses and Sydney trains. City Rail, meant to copy it over, think it's Welcome to CityRail but 'city rail' in Google will bring it up. The address above is for the map for the # 136 bus service which I see goes from Chatswood out to the Northern Beaches and goes thru Forestville. There's may be a service that goes from Chatswood to Epping. Regarding the trains, you want the North Shore and Northern Lines for Chatswood. It's mostly an above-ground service although there are a few parts where it goes underground, mostly in the City but it's all the same lines - it's not separate like the Tube and the Railway here. The Sydney Morning Herald site Sydney Morning Herald - Business News, World News & Breaking News in Australia is pretty good for news and real estate - look up your favoured areas for rental/buy (assuming you're not already using it!) It's been quite interesting for me looking at these sites!
