After hours of exhausting research on the net we have sort of, kind of, maybe decided to think about moving to the NSW north coast. I would love to hear from anyone who lives in(or has even just visited) any of the following towns:
Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Bathurst, Bellingen.
My hysband is a chef of the fine dining variety so we are hoping to find somewhere that is either an established or an up and coming foodie destination. We also have 2 young sons so would like somewhere suitable for a family.
I would appreciate any advice, information or opinions on any of these towns, or any others that are nice.
Apparently Port Macquarie has a lot of retirees iin it, and isn't as attractive as Coffs harbour. there were a few realy nice places to eat in Bellingen and when we were there, we visited a gorgeous award winning cafe/restaurant that was for sale. We spoke to a couple of locals about it and they said it should be open in the evenings for business as they thought it wld go down a storm. At the mo they do brekiie & lunch and it had bags of atmosphere. Business for Sale in Australia - realcommercial.com.au
Hope this links works, it looks as if it is stillfor sale, even if it just gives you an idea of what's on offer. Itf it doesn't work, this is how to find it Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au then click on businesses for sale in Bellingen in food & hospitality. Currently the basement is let out to an Accountant and the top flat is let out. great potential. Kempsie is apparently very nice too but haven't been. We're heading out to Coffs in January.
good luck! Any other questions, dont hesitate to contact me.

Hi
I would agree that Coffs Harbour is a lot nicer than Port Macquarie. We spent last xmas in Port Macquarie (we stayed for a week at the Big4 Campsite). We went out for a few beers on xmas eve and unfortunately the bar we were drinking in shut up shop at 10pm! They didn't really seem to celebrate xmas in this town, not that we too bothered as we spent xmas day lounging on the beach having had a barbie for our xmas day meal.
I don't recall seeing any good/fine dining restaurants, although we had a cracking pizza, and the fish & chips were as good as anywhere in Oz, if not as greasy as ours in England!
All the best
Jimbob & Rachel

Well, we were there in July/Aug and i think it had been on the market for a few months. The couple that run it sailed over from the Caribbean and fell in love with the area, then took over the cafe.
The views from the cafe are beautiful, it has a lovely balcony where there are a few tables, a nice patio type area outside, big log burner inside and as well as a few regular tables inside, it has one huge one where you sit down next to other punters which is how we got talking to a local there.
Bellingen market was a fantastic day out, the food there was brilliant, they were making fresh tortillas, curries, lebanese food, stir frys, crepes etc. Great day out.
