Job Offer in Sydney and where to live

My husband has had a job offer as a Non-Technical Trainer with the following:

annual Salary $82500.00

Super 9.5% $7837.50

company Vechicle $6000.00

laptop $2500.00

mobile phone $1300.00

training $8000.00

clothing $1000

total $109,137.50

the job is based in Chullora and Lidcombe.

we would be really interested to have an idea to what this would equate to in take home money after tax etc. so we can make a decision on where to maybe live. We have two small children so in the first 18/24 months I would ideally not work as childcare would probably equate to my incoming salary.

any suggestions on areas to live (on this take home salary) with 3 bedrooms (single storey) would also be helpful

thank you :jiggy:

Hello, well done, Heavy Transport ?

With two little un's and new to area, I'd say not lidcombe, not Auburn, nor any of the areas immediately west of lidcombe, I'd avoid Bankstown and l would definitely not say Lakemba, Punchbowl nor Greenacre, unless you speak arabic.

Ryde, Gladesville, Burwood at a push, but Five dock , abbotsford to the east would be nice, Parts of paramatta, even Rydlemere, but avoid villawood , fairfield and cabramatta.

Properties will be cheap-ish, so best to look around and try a short let and see if you like the place/explore different places, I would not suggest taking a long term let say for example right next to bankstown airport because it's attractive.

I've lived in the inner west suburbs of sydney (Balmain/Leichardt) and often arrived at bankstown at all hours of the day and I simply cannot recommend it.

ok so maybe not burwood, concord, croydon, fivedock and drummoyne (hubby can ride a bike to Lidcombe if he's fit)

Bad news is rents are going to be 700-900 + per week for anything decent, and if it's alot less, then there is a reason, usually area or state of repair

As far as I'm aware, the amount you've quoted for super is something your employer pays directly to your fund, so you shouldn't factor it in when calculating your take-home pay. Just a thought, in case you were planning on using the $109k figure as the gross amount to calculate the net amount.

I don't know why it never occurred to me to suggest it before, having seen lots of threads like yours, but why not ask your husband's prospective employer to recommend areas to live subject to your requirements? I'm surprised more companies don't offer relocation services anyway. Try and find out where other employees live. It might be handly purely for socialising purposed to live close to other employees, and it's certainly handy to live somewhere nice and also easy to commute to work from.

There is a lady on PIO who has just moved to Penrith area - Glenfield Park (I can't think of your name, sorry! "Metoo?") If you listen to many people who post on PIO, then Penrith, and every other suburb more than ten kilometres west of the CBD is just another word for 'Hell", which in my opinion is complete BS, and I know from reading her posts that she is most certainly not living in "Hell."

Also, (ethnic) "immigrant" does not equal "bad" when it comes to choosing a suburb. Sydney is a multi-cultural and multi-racial city. Here in Surry Hills my neighbours are from all over the world, Asia, SE Asia, The Middle East, Europe. I find it rather amusing that there is both a mosque and a transvestite brothel within 100 metres of my home.

I don't think there are many homes at Chullora itself as it's mostly industrial, Greenacre maybe, yes, it's full of "Arabs." Lidcombe might be OK to live in. If there is one thing which does equate to "Hell" (maybe worse than "Hell" too) it is commuting whether by car or public transport, especially when it is hot and sunny like today. (I just went out to hang my washing and it was almost dry before I'd finished pegging it.) So, finding a place to live within easy commuting distance is well worth weighing up against other negative aspects of a suburb.

I used to live in South Strathfield, Chiswick Street, off Coronation Parade, which always seemed to me to be a "nice" family-friendly suburb. I just Googled it and the distance is about seven kilometres. For good measure, a house to rent in Lidcombe came up too for $520 a week. You would not get a one bedroom flat in Surry Hills for that.

Draw a circle up to ten kilometres from Lidcombe and Chullora and do a search on http://www.domain.com.au. Do some research. Bankstown for instance has all the services you'd ever need, including 365 days a year, 7 day, 7am to 10pm, bulk-billing medical centres, which you don't find in many parts of Sydney.

You could have a look at parts of Sutherland Shire. Menai/Bangor area to Chullora/Lidcombe would be maybe 45 minutes drive at a guess. Menai is pretty nice, family friendly and it has shops/supermarkets etc. Illawong is also nice, but I would imagine it is more expensive being near the river.

I agree, South Strathfield is a nice family-friendly area, and there's nothing wrong with Lidcombe either IMO.

84 to 86 I lived in South Strathfield. Our parents helped my brothers and I to buy a house then my brothers got married. If only we had kept the house in all three names and when one of my brothers divorced his ex would have got a sixth not a half.

All water under the bridge now. If only e had hung on to all our property in some kind of family trust.

Tony Benn knew how to do it!

Yes @MARYROSE02 Glenmore Pk is a very pleasant area to live. A nice safe family orientated area, wild life in the reserve on your doorstep and a short drive into Penrith for Westfield shopping centre. Also handy for the Blue Mountains, Sydney Olympic Park and Wet n Wild. It is a bit of a drive to the CBD but by train you can get there in an hour.

In another life I'd have moved to Penrith to be close to my job with the ATO.

28 years ago I moved to Surry Hills from Narrabeen to be close to my job at Garden Island.

Glenmore Park is about half an hour's drive from Glenfield - two totally different areas!

Glenmore Park is at the foot of the Mountains.
