Hi There
We are considering NSW as to where we would like to end up but having never been we are trying to gather as much info as possible. We are looking at Newcastle and its surrounding areas (maybe maitland which is slightly more inland). I have an auntie who lives in Sydney and has been told its a great place to live with good schools and big regeneration programs going on but this only what she has been told. We where wondering if anyone else has any advice especially with regards to nice and affordable places to live?? help please!!!!!!!!!
The area you are talking about is the "Hunter valley" and its a very up and coming area. we are looking to return to Australia within the next year and this is an area we are considering. Prices are shooting up there now but if you want check out some prices and types of home ? look here Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au and type in the postcodes 2321, 2330,2333,2337.
We are looking a bit farther up towards Tamworth too 2340. Let us know what you reckon .MS

Hiya
Newcastle is one of the places that we are considering. One of our best Aussie Mates lives in a suburb called Belmont which he calls 'paradise' as you have lake macquarie on one side and the ocean on the other, there is also a great golf club! There are a few nice suburbs and its only 2hrs from sydney - Charlestown is also nice. Our other best mates from sydney got married in the hunter valley just outside Maitland - very nice, with lots of little towns like Morpeth etc nearby. You also have the added bonus of Port Stephens, Nelsons Bay about 40km up the coast from Newcastle which are absolutely gorgeous - perfect place for a long weekends holiday! We can also vouch for the healthcare in newcastle as OH spent a couple of nights in hospital when we were in Newcastle having his appendix out when we were there. I had to be self sufficient i.e. drive around, find chemists etc for drugs and that kinda helped my decision that i could actually live there. Because its obviously not as big as sydney everyone is really nice! If you PM me I can send you some photos from that area.

Thanks for that I am especially interested in the health care as I am a nurse so will be looking for a job within a reasonable commute from where we decide to settle. We are starting to get excited and we have only just got our TRA back. We need to start the visa process now. But can't wait to get there already!!
Hi there. We are moving to Victoria in 8 weeks but will be moving up to Newcastle mid July next year. After EXTENSIVE research we narrowed it down to 2 options. Firstly Salamander Bay/Nelson Bay/Corlette - up in the Port Stephens area. Our other option as mentioned by others was Belmont. We chose these areas after checking out the schools; crime reports, property prices and talking to people we know who come from Newcastle. The school that we found in Belmont that we loved was Belmont Christian College (age 4-18). In Salamander Bay it was St Philips. After much debate we have finally reached our decision and we are heading to the beautiful costal area of the Bay. The school - again 4-18 could take all our children and the area is just paradise. Check it out on google earth and look at the pics! There are plenty for our kids to do in the Bay and its seems such a waste to move to somewhere as beautiful as NSW and Hunter Valley and not live near the sea.
Hope all goes well for you. If you're heading to that part of the Hunter Valley - keep in touch.
Thanks for that, schools for us are very important to us as we have 3 children under 6 are thy public or private the ones mentioned? I was wondering if anyone could tell us what the commute time is to newcastle to from the nelson bay area as we too liked the look of it but i feel my job will take me into Newcastle and I don't want a massive communte if at all possible.
