      Job offer in Sydney...

hello everyone. I am a family of 3 (baby 11 months). I have been offered a job with sponsorship in Sydney with basic salary at 70k
is this do-able with just one wage as my wife would be looking after the baby full time?

      appreciate your comments and feedback

the position is based in west sydney and probably be looking at renting/living in the south.

Hi teamgb, I'm sure more people will soon be along to help you better. But here's what I've gathered from reading posts in this regard on here. 70K in the western burbs is doable. Clarify with your employer whether they would pay super on top of that or not. The main expense is rent. Depending on what you are looking for--unit/house--check out the rents in areas you would like to live. Then calculate what you take home everyday would be. The main differing factor of expenses with re. to Sydney and the rest of the country is the rent. Food etc it is possible to shop wisely and spend less. I don't imagine you maybe able to afford too much of a going out etc lifestyle but hopefully a modest living is possible.

thanks for you reply. I would be looking at 500 per week max for rent as advised by the company for a 2 bed townhouse/apartment
I will be working in riverwood eventually and have been looking at oatley or miranda.
any more advice would be appreciated, with having a little one i want to make sure everything is accounted for.

      look forward to more coments/views....

I was looking at these areas as well.--From what I hear Panania and picnic point are reasonable family areas--so is Como/oysterbay. currently i'm struggling to find a school for my kids--guess I would have to go over and visit a few before that.

I live in Sutherland Shire and we manage on a salary of $65k, we are a family of four. It can be done providing you are willing to cut your cloth to fit. We shop around, we don't have expensive taste in clothing, we are careful with electricity etc. We did bring savings with us, we put down a big deposit on a house so we have a smallish mortgage, we bought our cars outright etc so that we don't have extra monthly outgoings and we tend to pay bills (eg insurances) outright rather than monthly. We have always done this though.

Definitely doable, particularly if you would be happy to live in an apartment. Would probably be more of a stretch if you wanted a house.

If you are not used to a luxury lifestyle you could manage on $70K but it might be a bit tight with kids, it is the extras or emergency things that throw you. We managed on one wage for 10 months before I found work and must admit we found it hard, paying 500 a week rent and watching every penny. Will you have a 457 visa? Bear in mind school fees if you do. There are a heap of threads on here about living costs in Sydney, check some of them out.
