suburbs in Sydney
I'm moving to Sydney, Australia in 3 months and have been doing my on-line search about the best suburbs in Sydney. I find it really confusing since there are about 600 of them!
I'm coming with my partner and because we wont have a car at the beginning I want to live in an suburb that is that is near Sydney (20/30 min by bus) ,good transport, affordable (within $400p/w) and a safe area with facilities nearby. I really don't care if it has nightlife or entertainment or if its near a beach. We just want a house with a nice garden for bbqs :)))
Any suggestions?
Thanks a bunch and all replies welcome

Thank for replying. Yes I have looked at the real estate many many times but it doesn't tell you in there if it has good transport(all of them say "good" transport but surely other areas are far better) or if the neighbourhood is "red district". I am quite concerned about this since I don't wont to be stuck with a one-year contract in a neighbourhood that is inconvenient or I have to get two means of transport to work...

When you say 20/30 mins by bus to Sydney I assume you mean the CBD - city centre?
If so then you won't have a hope of getting a nice house with a garden for $400 a week.
That kind of budget could get you a one bed apartment somewhere like Kensington/Kingsford/Maroubra. Possibly with a shared garden or balcony. Decent enough areas and have good transport by bus down Anzac parade.
I only really know the eastern suburbs so can't comment on the wider Sydney area but generally the further west you go you get more for your $. So if your budget is strict then you may need to compromise on journey time into the CBD.

I understand your concerns. Have you found any houses at $400pw and in what suburbs? You might find something Mount Colah, Berowra, to the far north of Sydney. It is ~ 1hr train ride to the CBD. I am not saying these are the only places suitable, but ones that come to mind if you are set on being in a house rather than an apartment. A lot depends on what you are looking for.

Whilst we are on about suburbs in the NSW area, What is Bondi like as an area to live? I know the properties are expensive. It was the area, people, behaviour I was referring to.
If it happens then it happens. If it doesn't well it doesn't. Amor Fati !!

Yes that is what Im looking for 1 bedroom apartment . Maroubra sounds really nice. Is that close to the beach? Thats what I see on the map... it looks beautiful. does it have in general convenient transport not only to the cities but to other areas as well?

It's an amazing beach alright. Not so much in the way of facilities like other beaches but a bloody good one. However Maroubra is a city of two tales really. Some parts have amazing huge stunning houses and great streets of normal housing but then it does have some social housing and dodge pots hanging around there. At that budget I would say getting somewhere nearer the junction would be best. A few decent cafes and restaurants there and good shopping too with butchers, grocers and a large Coles. Transport to the city is good and also to Eastgardens (a large mall). Elsewhere probably not so good and you would have to go via the city - but that's probably true of anywhere.
Definitely recommend it. Might get more for you money in Kingsford or Kensington mind as they are not as close to the beach - though no more than 30 mins away by public transport.
