Doing a straw poll on the pros and cons of life down under here:

Please visit and add your comments, so far I've got:

The Best Things About Living in Australia

  • Great weather
  • Interesting birds and wildlife
  • Good schools
  • Friendly, funny people
  • Safe and politically stable
  • Great and diverse scenery
  • Swimming in warm ocean and excellent public pools
  • Outdoor Lifestyle, lots of bike and walking tracks
  • Sporting opportunities
  • Camping galore
  • Beaut beaches
  • Surfing all year round
  • $4 clean skin wines from Dan Murphy

The Worst Things About Living in Australia

  • Very suburban
  • Skin cancer rates, highest in the world
  • Complicated tax system and high taxes
  • Dangerous wildlife like snakes and spiders
  • Droughts, water shortages and forest fires
  • Cockroaches, in every Queensland rental house apparently
  • Surf Rage incidents and crowded surf breaks
  • Hideous crows cawing at all hours and raiding bins

Cheers and good luck everyone:)

I suppose I can, then I can add it to my blog myself! I'd prefer if if people added the comments straight to the blog but if you'd prefer to add them here that's fine. There are a few comments already on the blog though...

Cheers! Annabel

  • Great weather
  • Not always, it rains a lot and is cold (Perth) and the Heat is as bad as the cold in lots of ways...you soon get fed up with it being to hot.

  • Interesting birds and wildlife
  • Kangaroos taste nice but the squaking parekeet type birds so your head in.

  • Good schools
  • Only if private, state is not as good as the UK.

  • Friendly, funny people
  • As john Mcenroe once said "you cannot be serious"

  • Safe and politically stable
  • That's funny.

  • Great and diverse scenery
  • not a patch on the UK

  • Swimming in warm ocean and excellent public pools
  • If you dont mind the jellyfish and effulent.

  • Outdoor Lifestyle, lots of bike and walking tracks
  • to hot or to wet.

  • Sporting opportunities
  • Kids do not play sport they stay in and play on the xbox like all kids in the world

  • Cmping galore
  • Only if you dont mind flies snakes and spiders

  • Beaut beaches
  • Soon tire of the sand in your knickers.

  • Surfing all year round
  • you kidding Perth is wet cold and windy for 6 months of the year

  • $4 clean skin wines from Dan Murphy
  • Beer and wine is a rip-off in Oz very expensive especially if you go out

No, the comments link is so tiny you need a microscope to see it so well done and thanks for that. So true, I replied already, you've probably already seen it so I won't repeat it all. I guess they're all negatives:)

Cheers, Annabel

Inlimbo, Lol! I guess you're not loving it here! I have to admit, Perth doesn't sound that appealing the way you describe it:) My favourite comment was:

  • Friendly, funny people
  • As john Mcenroe once said "you cannot be serious"

OK, I admit, you can't beat a Brit sense of humour. But surely that wine is dirt cheap compared to the UK and personally I never tire of sand in my knickers!

Cheers, big ears!

Aha, some one else who likes the people! Maybe because there are so many poms.... Actually the monocultural society here in the Sunshine Coast is one of the worst things about living here. I'd love to see a bit more cultural diversity but I suppose you have to go to the cities for that!

  • 3 years later...

Australian wine is cheaper in the UK than it is in Oz - I looked

I'd say the weather is a bit better, generally nicer all year round even though extremes are much worse but mainly the rain doesn't set in like it does in the UK. It showers then stops and moves onto a nice day again.

Every other positive like beach and outdoor stuff is really derived from the weather and to be honest I'm an outdoors type here and the UK and cant say I spend any more time outdoors as I still have to sleep, eat dinner and go to work.

The main bad things are tax, customer services, Perth's remoteness, lack of choice, expense of everything (so much more and no reason for it) and bureaucracy and everything takes ages - crossing a road may take 5 minutes plus!

However I would say it all depends on your situation, if your into breeding or have kids then its probably great as your tied down anyway and due to the weather it is a nice place to stay. If your younger and dont have a family, single or even an older couple it isnt the best place to be honest.

None of that applies outside of WA. Particularly for singles or oldies it can't be beaten. Must say I've had great times in WA but wouldn't live there

My Ozzie husband wants to post - I think I'll let him ! Good....beaches great, weather great, intense differences in weather - not English drizzle. Not good........socially I find they don't socialise as much as the Brits, not much culture, works in harder to find, travel time more.
