What are the best high schools and Primary schools there. My son is 10 and should do about 6months of primary school from Jan-June before he moves to high school. can anyone recommend a good school, Goods GCSE results/ No bullying that kind of stuff. I look forward to your comments. Sarah There are no bad schools in harrogate, it is a beautiful and very affluent expensive place to live. I find that the case is that a lot of parents are professionals and therefore have high expectations of their chilren and the schools. (thats not to say anyone else has lower) as a general rule, the schools are moderately better in the south of the town but all are great. What you really need to do without question, is to get applying asap, as the schools are all very over subscribed, and then any over places go to out of area children. the closing date to choose for high school is withing the first few days of November for the following year. Any applications after this will be considered late and will be considered after even the children from out of the area who applied in time. A slight way around this is that if you are new to the area, you can apply until the end of Jan, then you are considered new to the area and then jump up over the children from out of the area. just make sure you do you application before then. My friend missed this deadline and therefore was offered a school place towards bradford (big no no) even though she lived in the street of the chosed secondary school.. hop this makes sense, but as I say, you will not make a bad choice which ever you choose.:spinny: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sarah Hi Sarah I know that St Aidan's High School in Harrogate is very highly regarded (often ranked within top 20 comprehensive schools nationally), although I have heard that it can be difficult to get into. St Aidan's Church of England High School, Harrogate, North Yorkshire Having said that, I do not live in Harrogate therefore cannot comment on any others. All the school in Harrogate are very good, except one, Harrogate High School - formerly known as Granby High School, it was put into special measures last year and has just come out of them, but still isn't that great. It mostly sits vocational courses which are fine if your children aren't academic. It's a sports specialist college, which again is great if your kids are sporty. St aidan's is great, but is oversubscribed as are the rest of the schools in Harrogate (except Harrogate High School) but it is also a faith school so you have to be a practicing Christian and be able to prove it. Similiarly St John Fisher's - you need to be a practicing Catholic , and you need to be able to prove it. The best none faith school is Harrogate Grammar school (not a real grammar school) which is highly effective but VERY oversubscribed. The only way you'll get into it is to literally live next door to it and it's an expensive part of town!! Then there is Rossett school. It has become oversubscribed because everyone who cannot get into St John Fishers, St Aidans or Harrogate Grammar will try to get in here to avoid going to Harrogate High school. It's a sports and mathematics specialist school and academically is middling. You could think about living in Ripon and commuting to Harrogate for your job (direct bus route every 20 minutes). In Ripon there are two school. Ripon Grammar - a selective school VERY academic or Ripon College, along the lines of Harrogate High School! If you're just an average Joe who doesn't have pots of money and can't get into the right catchment area/not practicing a faith then your best bet would be to request Rossett School on your CAF (common application form) which is sent out to primary school children at the beginning of their last year. Guest Pete and Lou Posted May 16, 2009 Share Posted May 16, 2009 Hi there, we've just left the area for the Sunshine coast and would agree with the previous posts about avoiding Harrogate High and the difficulties with the other schools in Harrogate. Have you considered Knaresborough and King James's School which has an excellent reputation and if you move to Knaresborough will be in the catchment area and will automatically get a place? I have lots of friends with children at King James and they only have good things to say about it. By the way do you want to rent a unique, 4 bedroom + office, beautiful house on the outskirts of Knaresborough with open views at the back!!!!!!!!!! Parents will bitch about which is the best but the truth is that they are all quite superb. Access to Aidens and Fishers requires 2 years of documented proof of church-going, and I dont mean just showing your face on Christmas Eve and Harvest Festival. It is extremely competitive. A number of local families suddenly find themselves drawn to faith at precisely 2 years before their eldest is due to move up to senior school. How odd? Rossett is not a bad school but has been under-funded in recent years as all the money has gone to rescue Harrogate High. Thankfully, that seems to be happening now with Harrogate High at last posting some very good GCSE results. That leaves the Grammar School. Access to the Grammar school is by catchment and last year, that catchment was under 0.8 miles in radius. House prices carry a premium if the property will 'guarantee' you a place. Surprisingly though, rents in the area are not too bad. The school is always majorly oversubscribed. In part, this is due to what is known as the 'village passport', a system which is now under review but currently gives priority to children from a number of local villages at the expense of those who might live only a mile away. I loved it there - high standards and absolutely no bullying was witnessed. In fact my friends and I are still in close contact even though we are all over the world. Some firneds still live there and they plan to send their children there. Rossett Acre Primary is close by and a good primary. Also hear that St Aidans has a good reputation. Guest ladyhgte Posted November 25, 2011 Share Posted November 25, 2011 Moved back to Harrogate after living in Europe for the past 6 years..... my son has just started high school this past september, and he was awarded a place at harrogate high.... actually I researched all of the high schools within the area and you should check out last years results...they have a fantastic headteacher and enthusiastic staff members too..... 97% pass rate in June. They have all made my son feel welcome and have gone out of their way to help him settle in,,,, I honestly cannot knock it,,,, as for you mentioning intelligence levels.... My son has attented international private school since the age of 5, therefore he is well educated and well above average...My son started in september it is now only november and I have already been approached about my son sitting a GCSE next year...he is 11 years old......
