Disagree all ya like..Thats what a forum like this is for...It helps everyone and everyone has different views..Whats right for some isnt always right for others Jo
Our experience of a reckie was a bit different to everyone else. I've always been up for trying the whole Aus thing and would have gone for it without the reckie, but the OH was always a lot more reluctant and she insisted we should 'try before we buy'. We spent a lot of money having a Reckie to Perth for a month last year and in the end it proved pretty much a waste. I loved it from the moment we touched down, while the OH didn't. I didn't want to come back, she couldn't wait. We had an amazing time, but were more confused than ever on returning. She had family over there already, but they weren't exactly helpful to our decision making and I think that probably clouded her judgement. It's taken nearly 18 months for my OH to clear her head about that time and she's now considering looking at another part of the country (away from the family) with Adelaide currently topping the list.
We did the Reckie and if all it did was make our minds up that Perth wasn't the place we would be best settling, then I suppose that's something.
For me, I had built up an impression of Australia before we went and it didn't vary much from our month there. As many have said, it's not utopia and has it's own problems, but for me it's a life i'd like to give a go before it's too late.
Glad you've come to a decision and your mind is settled, for us the last 18 months have been hard, I just wish we'd come to the same idea's about it all.
Well this thread makes for interesting reading at the moment.
To cut a long story short... we were going to move to NZ, then my wife changed her mind 6 months after we came back from a trip there, and now fancies Oz instead. I find myself with less enthusiasm for a move to Oz than I had for NZ.
We're off to Sydney and Adelaide in July and I'm really hoping that the trip/reccie/holiday whatever you want to call it, has me returning here with fire in my belly for a move there.
As things stand at the moment, my reluctance to make the move to Oz is based on unfounded assumptions of what I expect life there to be like - the UK but with better weather - and I don't want the UK with better weather
I don't know why the hell I'm writing this... just needed to voice my thoughts I guess

Make sure you let us know how it all goes. If you liked NZ, Tassie maybe for you!

All in all if you can afford it reckies are good imo. As you say BusyB it made your minds up that Perth wasn't for you, or perhaps your OH. We validated our Visas last Christmas and went to Perth and Melbourne expecting to really love Melbourne. Not sure if it was the weather (cos it poured kangaroos & possums the whole week) but we came away disappointed. We've now decided to head back to Sydney which is where we spent 2 years in a former life! It's a bit like checking out all the different areas of the UK, each city is different in some way and what works for some doesn't for all.
Hi Jill,
thats great that you were able to have a reckie before making a big move (unfortunatley we were not able to afford to do this) that really is my one big regret that we hadnt been able to spend a few months in oz before the big move. (if so things would be alot different for us now)
Anyway, be happy & all the best

Hi stuju
just wondering which things you would have done differently. I have read in other threads that you live in central coast, would you prefer to live in another area? Just interested as we are planning to move to your area when our visas come through and we also are unable to afford a reccie. Any advice gratefully received!

Good for you for at least going to take a look. Australia, however nice I'm sure, is not for everyone and for those who do take to it, the pull of family ties can prove too great.
We've never been but are hoping to do a reccie before deciding whether or not to go for it. I'm prepared to give it a few years over there, regardless of first impressions but I know my OH will miss her family big time. It won't be easy, that's for sure.
At least you've 'got it out of your system' and can move on with your life, satisfied you've made the right decision for you and yours - good on yer!

Hi Dom&corrie, I cant really say if i would have lived in a different area of oz as i havent really been to any other states yet to experience them, but in saying that having a few weeks in one place is so much different to living there day in & day out,(thats really something no one can judge untill you have done it) i would love to move into Sydney (but we cant afford it at the mo) i love big towns & citys, im not really a country bumpkin type of person.
But if im going to be perfectly honest and had had the chance to live in oz for 6 months or so and they have an option to do what ever - i would be back in the uk by now
Feel free to pm me any questions about the central coast that you may have & if i can help i will
All the best
stuju
