aduffield76
Hi all, Please can someone help me regarding some questions on renting and rates. When you are renting a house, what is the equivalent to British "Council Tax"? we see many posts mentioning "rates" aswell as "water", "electric" etc If someone is currently renting and can give me a helping hand regarding what to expect to pay, I would appreciate it. we are moving to Melbourne in January and are trying to be as prepared as possible. Thanks in advance guys Andy
rammygirl
Tenants don't pay the council rate bill. The owner of the property does. You will pay electric, gas and water charges, although usually not all water as landlord pays standing charges and sometimes some of usage if a garden needs irrigating. At least in SA. The landlords water bill is much more than the tenant pays.
Que Sera Sera
As above but we had to pay all our water usage even though nearly all of it was keeping the lawn and plants alive! We are in WA though.
dxboz
In Melbourne the tenant pays all the water usage.
blossom
We pay the water usage, and the service charge, but the landlord pays the sewage charges (or similar).
VERYSTORMY
We are classed as a unit (semi detached house) so dont pay water
newjez
As above but we had to pay all our water usage even though nearly all of it was keeping the lawn and plants alive! We are in WA though. I objected to this but I didn't get far. Wasn't happy. Should have just let the garden die. I didn't realise the retic was mains. rammygirl
Water usage is a smaller part of the bill though. Our tenants now pay all water usage. Our last bill was $382.20 of which only $50.82 was usage. It is the supply and sewerage charges that are expensive. Our underground irrigation system is very efficient so doesn't use much water as it is drip fed direct to the roots and not sprinkled out to evaporate or water the driveway!
