What do I do with my UK savings bond?

Hi there,

I have a fixed savings bond with Halifax that matures in the first quarter of 2013. As I'm moving to Australia in March this year, I'm wondering what do I do with it?

I guess I could leave it alone and transfer it over in 2013 - but do I have to take steps while in the UK to do this?

Or - I could close the account and withdraw the funds - but with the terrible exchange rate I'm not too keen on this option..

Is anyone in a similar situation?

I suggest that you cash it now before you move to Australia because it will a hassle to encash your bonds internationally. To cash in your savings bond, you can go to you local bank and cash them in there. Make sure you bring your identification card to show that you are the person on the the savings bond.

Unfortunately, the OP posted this in january 2012 and if her timetable was met, she moved over to Oz in March 2012 so your advice is too late.
